Position Overview

Under the leadership and direction of the Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse as team leaders, the Health Care Aide (HCA) provides support and assistance to residents/patients in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) as identified in the care plan. The HCA works to full scope of practice and engages in education and certifications to maintain competency. Person-centered care is provided according to established standards of practice, including but not limited to, Accreditation Canada Standards, Personal Care Home Standards, and legislative requirements.

The incumbent exercises the appropriate level of initiative and independent judgment in determining work priorities, work methods to be employed and action to be taken on unusual matters. The position functions in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision and values; and the policies of Southern Health-Santé Sud.

Responsibilities
  • Provide support and assistance with ADLs for residents/patients as identified in the care plan.
  • Work to full scope of practice and pursue education/certifications to maintain competency.
  • Adhere to established standards of practice and legislative requirements.
  • Prioritize workload and use independent judgment to determine actions on unusual matters.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience: One to two (1-2) years in a health care setting preferred; experience with elderly or disabled clients preferred.
  • Education: Minimum Grade 12; Health Care Aide Certificate from a recognized program; other combinations may be considered.
  • Certification/Licensure/Registration: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Acute Care).
Skills and Competencies
  • Confidentiality/privacy requirements (PHIA, FIPPA).
  • Workplace safety (WHMIS); Violence Prevention Program (VPP); SCHIPP training.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload; teamwork and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in English; ability to interact well with others; ability to work in stressful environments.
  • Respect for cultural diversity; bilingual skills for designated positions as required.
  • Respect for confidentiality in all formats; good attendance.
  • Some program areas may require a valid Class 5 driver’s license and vehicle liability insurance of at least $1,000,000.
Physical Requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job.
  • No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions.
  • May work evenings, nights and weekends.
  • Travel to other regional facilities may be required.
