Reporting to the Head Coach, Football, the Assistant Coach, Football (Operations Manager / Running Backs Coach) is a key leadership position within the Gryphons Football infrastructure. This dual-role position provides leadership in both football operations and on-field coaching, ensuring the Gryphon Football program operates efficiently, professionally, and in full alignment with University of Guelph, OUA, and U SPORTS standards. The position contributes directly to the competitive success and long-term sustainability of the program through athlete development, operational excellence, and community engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant Coach is responsible for supporting all phases of a U SPORTS football program. This includes coordinating day-to-day football operations, assisting with the execution of the annual plan, and managing logistics related to facilities, equipment, travel, scheduling, and game-day operations. The incumbent will work closely with the Head Coach and coaching staff to ensure the program is fully prepared to operate at an optimal level throughout the competitive and off-season periods, while maintaining strict compliance with University, conference, and national governing body policies and procedures.

In addition to operational responsibilities, the Assistant Coach serves as the Running Backs Coach and is responsible for the planning and delivery of all individual practice plans, drills, and skill development sessions for the position group. Working collaboratively within the offensive staff, the incumbent will coach student-athletes daily, support their technical and tactical development, and contribute to weekly game planning. The position also involves creating and implementing individual performance plans, conducting regular evaluations and exit meetings, and supporting student-athlete growth both on and off the field.

The role includes a contribution to recruitment and talent evaluation. Under the direction of the Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel, the Assistant Coach will attend and evaluate prospective student-athletes, assist with player assessments, and support recruitment efforts in alignment with institutional standards and academic expectations. The assistant coach will also be asked to contribute to performance analysis through the use of football video, data analytics, and sport science information to support strategic decision-making and athlete development.

A core component of this position involves leadership of revenue-generating initiatives and community engagement activities. The Assistant Coach will oversee the operational planning and delivery of football camps, skill clinics, and external programming, including curriculum development, staffing, equipment, and compliance requirements. The incumbent will also take a lead role in coordinating community initiatives and fundraising events, supporting alumni engagement, and assisting with the development and fulfillment of sponsorship opportunities in collaboration with the Athletics Department. Supervision of student staff and volunteers is an integral part of ensuring these initiatives are delivered professionally and effectively.

Requirements
  • An Undergraduate degree with two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • NCCP High Performance Level I coaching certification or equivalent, and experience coaching at the high performance level.
  • A knowledge of and commitment to Safe Sport practices, transformational coaching, OUA/U Sports rules and regulations, and the student athlete experience are essential to this role.
