THE POSITION

The Financial Analyst will be responsible for providing financial planning and analysis and reporting to support assigned business partners in understanding the financial performance of their operations, making business decisions, as well as assisting with their budgeting, forecasting and special reporting needs. The Financial Analyst will also support special reporting requirements for leagues such as the NHL, CFL, NLL, and WHL).

The position is an onsite,18-month fixed term contract.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Leadership
  • Be the primary finance contact for the Calgary Flames and Calgary Wranglers teams overseeing and providing financial analysis and support.
  • Create and foster effective working relationships with finance team members, business partners and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to maintaining a cohesive, engaged and positive team.
Financial and management reporting
  • Oversee Calgary Wranglers financial operations, together with the General Manager, Calgary Wranglers.

  • A focus on analysis and P&L/Balance Sheet management for all hockey activities in CSEC with a goal to be the financial expert for the Calgary Flames and Calgary Wranglers Hockey Operations including:

  • Analyzing current and past trends in key performance indicators (“KPIs”).

  • Monitoring KPIs, highlighting trends and analyzing causes of unexpected variance.

  • Analyzing financial information and reports to provide accurate and timely financial recommendations to management for decision making purposes partnering with finance accounting team members to investigate matters as required.

  • Preparing internal monthly financial statements, management reports and financial analysis.

  • Preparing NHL League reports as required.

  • Leading meetings with business partners to discuss their financial performance results, recommend improvement opportunities and advise on areas of concern.

  • Assisting with interim and year-end financial audit requests.

  • Assist finance managers and VP Finance as required with information requests for interim and year-end financial audits.

Planning and Budgeting
  • Support development of budget, forecast and planning timelines and general assumptions.
  • Coordinate development of annual operating and capital budgets and, as required, periodic forecasts and multi-year projections, if required, of financial results and positions for business partners.
  • Maintain effective relationships with hockey operations departments to ensure that budget, forecast and planning processes run smoothly.
  • Ensure financial rigor and discipline is injected into budgets and forecasts for business partners.
  • Identify and assist in implementing process improvements for budget, forecast and planning activities including system development and enhancements.
  • Act as Solver reporting subject matter expert for business partners.
NHL reporting:
  • Prepare HRR and URO for areas of responsibility.
  • Respond to HRR/URO audit queries as required.
  • Identify and implement/assist with implementing HRR and URO process improvements.
  • Maintain HRR and URO process documentation for areas of responsibility.
Other
  • Active participation in the Safety Program and follow all safety rules.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager or VP Finance.
THE INDIVIDUAL

The ideal candidate will have the following background:

  • Recent experience in a financial planning and analysis position.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel and Word skills.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains and Solver BI360 is beneficial
  • Experience with key performance indicator-based reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • High degree of confidentiality required
