Your Opportunity

We are seeking an Environmental Technician/Technologist to join our Water Resources Team. This position is based in our St. John’s, NL office and offers the opportunity for hands‑on fieldwork across a variety of sites.

You will be actively involved in water resources monitoring and sampling, including surface water and groundwater sampling, installation and maintenance of monitoring wells, water‑level measurements, and water‑quality assessments.

Fieldwork provides opportunities to experience the diverse terrain of Newfoundland and Labrador, including remote sites accessible by helicopter, and to participate in a wide range of projects, from large‑scale industrial and infrastructure developments to smaller community‑focused initiatives.

While the position also includes office‑based responsibilities such as data management, the majority of your time will be spent in the field.

This position may require the successful passing of a pre‑access physical and drug screen.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Adhere to all company and client health, safety, and environmental policies, ensuring work is performed in a safe and compliant manner.
  • Support Project Managers and senior technical staff in the planning and execution of environmental and water resources projects.
  • Provide oversight of subcontractors, including drillers and utility locators, during site characterization, soil excavation, and well installation activities.
  • Conduct field investigations under supervision, including borehole drilling oversight, monitoring well installation and testing, groundwater and surface water sampling, and hydraulic conductivity testing.
  • Maintain meticulous field records and ensure accuracy, consistency, and completeness of data collected.
  • Prepare borehole and monitoring well logs, and complete data management tasks when field work is completed.
  • Coordinate with laboratories, clients, subcontractors, and third‑party stakeholders to support timely and accurate project delivery.
  • Assist with data management, interpretation, and reporting, where required.
  • Travel as required to various field sites, including remote locations, with overnight stays as necessary.
  • Work independently when appropriate, while maintaining communication with senior staff for guidance and quality assurance.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Holds a valid Class 5 driver’s licence and demonstrates willingness to travel to various field locations, including occasional overnight assignments.
  • Eligible for federal security clearance.
  • Adaptable and comfortable working in diverse environmental conditions, including remote or aquatic settings, and capable of maintaining composure under challenging circumstances.
  • Physically capable of performing fieldwork, including safely lifting and transporting equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Collaborative and energetic professional committed to delivering high‑quality, consistent results on water resources and environmental projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in hydrogeological and hydrological field sampling techniques, including groundwater and surface water collection, well development, and hydraulic conductivity testing.
  • Proficient in the operation of specialized field instrumentation, including water quality meters, data loggers, and GIS‑integrated mobile data collection tools.
  • Proactive and confident decision‑maker with the ability to exercise sound judgment during field‑based monitoring and sampling activities.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, effectively balancing short‑term field requirements with long‑term project objectives and milestones.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in documenting field data.
Education and Experience

A Technician or Technologist Diploma is preferred; alternatively, a comparable mix of relevant education, training, and hands‑on experience will be considered.

Minimum of three to five years of practical field experience in environmental field monitoring.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Transparency

In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part‑time roles will be pro‑rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
