Job description

We are seeking a skilled Marine Systems Engineer – Aviation to join our Hull Engineering team and support the design and construction of multiple classes of Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard vessels. In this role, you will provide technical oversight and engineering expertise throughout the full vessel lifecycle - from design and construction to testing, commissioning, delivery, and certification.

This position focuses on the physical and functional integration of aviation support systems within naval vessels. Candidates with experience in naval or commercial ship design and construction will excel, and operational experience with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) is a strong asset.

Working with general guidance from the Hull Outfit & Aviation Integration Team Lead, you will independently review technical deliverables, support production and trials teams, and help resolve engineering challenges during construction.

This role includes work in both office and shipyard environments and is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving complex problems through practical and theoretical marine engineering principles.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) or equivalent, and Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation (or eligibility).
  • 4+ years of experience in ship design, ship construction, or a related complex industrial/manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of modern ship design and construction methods.
  • Familiarity with applicable marine standards and regulations, such as:
    • Lloyd’s Register
    • Transport Canada
    • IMO
    • IACS
  • Understanding of project scheduling, including ability to meet deadlines and develop/manage schedules.
  • Working knowledge of shipyard disciplines relevant to marine systems and hull outfit design, including:
    • Hull structure
    • Ship arrangements
    • Producibility
    • Manufacturing

Due to the nature of work Irving Shipbuilding does, all successful applicants must meet requirements for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Please note this position requires a full-time, in-office presence.

Responsibilities
  • Manage planned and emergent engineering work within assigned scope.
  • Support internal and external stakeholders to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Produce routine or low‑complexity engineering deliverables, including:
    • Technical specifications
    • System arrangement drawings
    • Technical reports
    • Test reports
  • Review and provide feedback on technical products from subcontractors and vendors.
  • Develop and document engineering processes and procedures for recurring tasks.
  • Identify discipline-related risks and develop effective mitigation plans.
  • Make informed, risk-based technical decisions during design and construction.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering discipline.
  • Support system installation, testing, and commissioning activities on the shipyard floor.
