Job description
DESCRIPTION

We are looking for an In-shop diesel technician-lead hand to join our team in Ottawa.

Cummins offers a $5,000 sign-on bonus for this position.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
  • Apply documented procedures and policies to perform diagnostics and complex repairs.
  • Perform preventative maintenance based on assessment of engine.
  • Complete required documentation, such as work completed documents, time sheets, warranty claims and quality forms, via handwritten or business system input screens.
  • Complete training in line with skill and business requirements.
  • Coach and develop technicians and/or apprentices and transfer knowledge and experience to others; may provide work direction; may review repair plans, parts lists, etc.
  • Maintain work area and tools for cleanliness and proper operation.
  • Adhere to and ensure adherence of more junior technicians to all relevant Health, Safety & Environmental policies, procedures and legislation and report any issues / incidents to their supervisor.
RESPONSIBILITIES
In order to be successful in this role you will need the following:
Diploma, Certification, license:
  • Red seal 310T certification is required for this role.
  • Locally valid driving permit
  • Clean driver’s abstract
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
Experience:
  • Good customer relation skills.
  • Diagnostic, electrical, chassis, and heavy‑duty engine experience is an asset.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Familiarity with OEM diagnostic software (e.g., INSITE).
  • Flexibility to attend service calls or support other locations as needed.
  • Advanced level knowledge of and/or experience with engine products.
  • Experience providing technical advice and coaching to more junior technicians is an asset.
  • Tech savvy and comfortable with different software.
About the role:

This lead hand position will include mechanical work but also the following:

  • Supervise and coordinate daily activities of technicians.
  • Hold weekly, mid‑year and year‑end reviews with technicians.
  • Review and optimize shop schedules; assign technicians and manage workflow
  • Ensure quoted job times are met and resolve issues affecting efficiency
  • Assist technicians in maintaining accurate work orders, technician notes, hours, and parts lists.
  • Ensure all documentation in company systems is completed accurately and communicate with customers regarding work required, progress, and timelines

  • Regular working hours are from 7am to 3:30pm - flexibility to work extra hours is required.
  • Salary between $38-$43 hourly to start, depending on experience. There is also an hourly lead hand premium added for this role.
