Overview
We have an immediate opportunity for an Electrical Engineer with thorough knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, and methods applicable to Transmission and Distribution engineering principles. This position requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Responsibilities
- Gather and evaluate line data of transmission, sub-transmission, and distribution systems, transformer test data, and generator data. Utilize Modell systems on appropriate software tools, such as CAPE.
- Perform short circuit studies and protection coordinated studies necessary for relay settings; perform relay settings and prepare protection summaries, coordinating relay settings with neighboring utilities and other authorities to meet WECC and NERC PRC compliance.
- Issue Substation Relays and field Auto Recloser settings (GE, SEL and Electromagnetic) through ASPEN relay database to field.
- Support Test technicians in servicing or commissioning relay settings; communicate with Test technicians to revise/change relay settings as required.
- Perform system studies to provide protection requirements by design.
- Design protective relay systems to ensure the safety and reliability of the grid by reviewing AC/DC/Logic drawings.
- Review and sign off on one-line, elementary logic diagrams and collaborate with engineers across the department.
- Develop and peer-review protective relay settings for systems ranging from 12 kV to 765 kV, demonstrating deep technical knowledge across a wide voltage spectrum.
- Lead and execute short circuit studies and design step distance and pilot protection schemes for 44-100 kV lines, ensuring system reliability and compliance with FAC-008/NERC/IEEE/ICE/ANSI standards.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 4+ years of engineering experience related to Transmission, Distribution, and Substation.
- PE desired, not required.
- Working knowledge of transmission systems operation (line-and-bus arrangements, reclosing practices).
- Knowledge of digital logic design principles (logic, gates, latches) and experience in developing logic diagrams.
- Experience and knowledge of System One-Line Diagram and relay and AC/DC schematics as well as AC/DC wiring standards.
- Experience in developing relay settings and familiarity with relay setting software (GE EnerVista UR Setup, SEL AcSELerator).
- Clear understanding and knowledge of NERC PRC Compliances (PRO 23, 27, 26).
- Ability to interpret/apply/design electrical one-line, elementary, protection logic diagrams.
- Demonstrated experience in developing logic diagrams, programming relay settings and preparing setting documents for Test technicians and supporting in-serving relays for bulk power.
- Proven experience with Computer Aided Protection Engineering Software (CAPE), CYME, ASPEN relay database or Blue Beam Software.
- Experience interpreting/applying, designing electrical one-line elementary, protection logic diagrams.
- Experience in performing system studies, symmetrical component analysis, fault calculation, and setting Electromechanical Relays and SEL and GE microprocessor relays using accelerator and URPC software.
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio, and Project.
- Ability to demonstrate effective resource and project planning, decision making, and the ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation.
- Excellent written and communication skills.
Upon a conditional job offer, a drug test and background check will be required.
Compensation based on experience.
