A community-focused organization is seeking an Early Childhood Educator to oversee child development at the Biigtigong Children and Family Learning Center. The ideal candidate will have a Post-Secondary Diploma in Early Childhood Education and experience with First Nation children. Responsibilities include planning developmental programs and enhancing children’s growth in a supportive environment. This is a full-time permanent position located in Ontario, Canada.

Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Children & Family Learning Center Supervisor, the Early Childhood Educator is responsible for the daily care of the children registered at the Center as well as the planning and implementation, of age-appropriate programs to enhance the children’s cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. All duties and responsibilities will be in accordance with the Child Care and Early Years Act and program philosophy.

Skills & Qualifications:
Candidates will be screened according to the listed criteria. It is the responsibility of the candidate to indicate that she/he meets the following criteria:

  • A Secondary School Graduate Diploma (Grade 12)
  • Post-Secondary Diploma in Early Childhood Education
  • Registered Member of College of Early Childhood Educators
  • Clear Criminal Reference Check upon hire
  • Current First Aid & CPR.
  • Experience working with First Nation Children and Families

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Promote the philosophy and mandate of the Biigtigong Children and Family Learning Center
  • Maintain communication and establish a working relationship with community organizations, children, parents and elders.
  • Ensure that Band Members are well informed of the Children and Family Learning Center through promotional activities, encouraging feedback from members
  • Pursue personal professional development by attending relevant training workshops, seminars and meetings when required.
  • Works in consultation with the supervisor and other staff to provide age-appropriate developmental programs to enhance the children’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development.
  • Uses a variety of teaching techniques including modeling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcing.
  • Plan and provide a daily balance of active/quiet, indoor/outdoor, and individual/group activities. Implements a schedule that incorporates child-directed activity, care routines and transition times
  • Prepares activities, crafts, circles, etc.
  • Provide positive social experiences including sharing, cooperation, respect for others and self sufficiency
  • Plans and carries out activities that encourage problem solving
  • Plans and carries out developmentally appropriate activities and experiences in accordance with the program philosophy
  • Design and develop a program curriculum as per the learning center guidelines
  • Learn and utilize Nishnaabeg tradition, language, culture and world view in the daily planning and care of the children of the center
  • Perform other duties as required
