Overview

Director, Health and Safety – Reports to: VP, People. Job type: Full-time, Permanent. Location: Hybrid – Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Halifax. Language requirements: English; French is an asset.

Position summary: The Director, Health and Safety will be responsible for developing, implementing and managing Occupational Health and Safety Programs across ChangeMakers (the Company) with special focus on the First Nations Child and Family Services and Jordan’s Principle Claims Helper Program (the Program). This role collaborates with senior leadership, employees and stakeholders to create strategies, policies and approaches that position the Company and Program as a safe workplace using trauma-informed and culturally safe practices, protect individuals and the organization, reduce lost time due to injuries and illnesses, and improve productivity. The role ensures compliance with external health and safety bodies and provides support to internal teams on provincial and territorial labour laws and health and safety regulations, including claims, accident reporting, and compliance with relevant legislation.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and deployment of comprehensive safety programs founded on data analysis and industry best practices that are trauma-informed and culturally safe.
  • Foster a health and safety culture across all levels by developing clear policies, procedures and processes that are practical and actionable in day-to-day operations through leadership, employee engagement and regular assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with external health and safety bodies and provide support to internal teams on provincial and territorial labour laws and health and safety regulations, including claims, accident reporting, and compliance with the relevant legislation.
  • Act as a liaison between the company and provincial / territory occupational health and safety bodies for ongoing claims management.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to develop and integrate strategies across the organization (Corporate Operations, People Team, IT Team, Program Leads, Wellness and Training Team).
  • Investigate incidents and accidents, conduct root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Perform additional tasks such as workplace inspections and audits, workers’ claims and return to work, and emergency response and preparedness.

Qualifications
  • Must have: Bachelor’s Degree, Diploma, or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or related field with knowledge of OH&S legislation (e.g., OHSA, WSIA, OHRC, AODA) and applicable codes and standards; proven experience in developing, implementing and managing progressive Health, Safety and Wellbeing programs; experience applying project and change management principles to Health & Safety initiatives; experience in community-based Health & Safety work (e.g., mobile social workers, personal support workers); lived or work experience with Indigenous communities preferred; strong communication, problem-solving and leadership skills; ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment; valid driver’s license.
  • Good to have: CRSP designation or working towards it; proficiency in Microsoft Office; bilingual English & French is an asset.
