Position

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The Director of Care provides leadership and direction to all care department staff including social work, recreation, volunteers, and leisure services.

The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic, or typical of the job class:

Responsibilities
  • Directs the operations of the residence/home in the absence of Executive Director
  • Ensures and/or develops, implements, and evaluates goals, objectives, delivery of resident care and general operations of the care department
  • Develops, submits to stakeholders for review, monitors, revises, and authorizes policies and procedures
  • Establishes standards of practice in care consistent with the professional discipline and regulatory bodies
  • Directs the hiring, orientation, training, evaluation, recognition, disciplining and terminations in concert with Territorial standards; submits and acts on incident reports; deals with complaints across the division
  • Administers collective agreements and participates in the collective bargaining process
  • Participates in the development of the strategic direction for the home
  • Negotiates contracts with external agencies providing care and services to the home (i.e., pharmacy, lab, physicians)
  • Develops reports and proposals for submission to government regulatory funding bodies
  • Prepares the departmental budget, administers and operates within the approved budget for financial control, personnel management and resident care programs, and ensures optimum utilization of resources
  • Oversees the purchasing and inventory control systems and ensures deliveries are checked when received
  • Responsible for the management of conflict resolution with respect to staff, patients, and families
  • Networks with other departments in the home and external agencies and organizations to optimize overall operations (i.e., resident load and services)
  • Oversees that regular chart audits are conducted and makes recommendations to ensure compliance with all legislative, regulatory, and organizational requirements
  • Remains on-site during declared emergencies and works with the Emergency Measures Team to ensure the safety of residents and staff (i.e., flood, ice storm, fires)
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Education and Certifications
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL ATTAINED: The successful job applicant will have completed more than two (2) years of Community College. NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.
  • SPECIAL LICENSES, DIPLOMAS, CERTIFICATIONS OR REQUIREMENTS: The successful applicant will hold/have:
  • Must hold a current certificate of competence as a Registered Nurse with the licensing body of respective province
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Experience

MINIMUM PRIOR RELATED EXPERIENCE: The incumbent must have the following experience before hire: Five years but less than seven years of prior related experience, including gerontology, management, program planning and education delivery, critical analysis, union, accreditation and budgeting experience.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL RESOURCES: The incumbent prepares part of the departmental budget. He/She may have limited input to the development of new policies and procedures pertaining to the management of financial resources.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMAN RESOURCES: The incumbent is responsible for the direct and indirect supervision of supervisory staff and non-supervisory staff reporting to supervisory subordinate. The incumbent directly supervises between 5-7 full-time employees, part-time employees, and/or volunteers and indirectly supervises between 45-60 full-time equivalent employees.

Work Environment and Exposures

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The incumbent’s work environment is typically throughout the facility. Those typical of a care facility. The incumbent may have little to no travel required. The incumbent works shift, is on-call and carries a pager/cell phone.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $92,630.70 to $115,788.38 with a maximum of $138,946.05. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
