The Opportunity

To provide patient-focused assessment, intervention, and education to those affected by serious mental illness or acute instability in adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations. This position responds to crisis/emergency situations in the Emergency Department and to internal psychiatric consultations within CGMH. Responsibilities include timely triage, assessment, and case management of treatable illness with a view to short-term intervention and use of consultation. The role requires familiarity with fundamental psychiatric presentations, medical co-morbidity, and psychotherapy.

Qualifications
  • Currently registered in good standing with a health regulatory College in Ontario.
  • Experience with Substance Abuse/Concurrent Disorders is an asset.
  • Minimum 4 years of clinical experience in a mental health setting, including case management and/or individual and group counselling.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, and Substitute Decision Maker Act.
  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification.
  • Knowledge of the DSM IV.
  • Strong assessment skills (physical, mental, risk).
  • Experience with Mental Health Assessment Tools.
  • Knowledge of Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Strengths Based Therapy, and CBT is an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of family dynamics and pharmacology treatment of psychiatric disorders.
  • Knowledge of Regional Resources.
  • Commitment to a safe and supportive environment for patients, staff, physicians, and volunteers.
  • Adherence to Occupational Health and Safety Act duties.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English; additional languages are an asset.
  • Basic computer skills and commitment to professional growth.
  • Ability to perform essential duties with physical demands as needed (moving/transferring patients, pushing, pulling, bending, etc.).
  • Excellent attendance/performance record; strong organization and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate with the health care team.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Conduct assessments based on accepted current mental health standards.
  • Initiate appropriate intervention, including short- or long-term therapy, case consultation, engagement with family medicine, and coordination of care with psychiatry, addiction, or forensic referrals.
  • Work with pharmacological interventions as warranted.
  • Maintain clinical records per clinic policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Consult with family physicians and the circle of care regarding psychiatric care and system coordination.
  • Liaise with long-term care, retirement homes, hospitals, medical and social service agencies.
  • Act as an active member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate in training, education, and clinical supervision; engage in quality improvement.
  • Perform duties as assigned by Leadership and uphold ethics of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.
  • Work in alignment with CGMH values.

Hours of Work: 24/7 operations; availability for weekdays, weekends, and all shifts (days, evenings, nights) may be expected.

Wage: $49.27 - $58.51 per hour plus applicable shift premiums.
