Overview

Job Title: Cook

Department: Dietary

Location: Northside Community Guest Home - North Sydney, NS, Canada

Responsible To: Director of Dietary Services

Purpose: To ensure the timely and accurate preparation of meals that align with both general dietary requirements and individual needs. The Cook is responsible for baking and assisting with all aspects of food preparation throughout the facility. This position also serves as a backup for the Head Chef when needed and follows all safety, hygiene, and food preparation regulations as set by dietary services and dietitians.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and serve menu items according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Follow daily menus planned by the dietary supervisor and dietitian for individual nutritional needs.
  • Maintain high sanitation and safe food handling practices.
  • Operate kitchen appliances and clean equipment and work areas.
  • Record and manage holding temperatures and freezer storage temperatures.
  • Adhere to regulations including infection control, hazardous materials handling, fire and equipment safety, and lifting techniques.
  • Assist in training new employees and attend required in-services (WHMIS, Fire-Safety, Food Handlers, First Aid / CPR).
  • Participate in dietary staff meetings.
  • Assist in the supervision and instruction of food service staff as assigned.
  • Supervise assigned subordinate staff members.

Working Hours and Schedule
  • Subject to rotation and change, including weekends and holidays
  • Job Types: Part-time, Casual
  • Pay: $22.10 - $24.56 per hour
  • Expected Hours: 4–40 per week
  • Schedule: 8 hour shifts; Evening shift; Holidays; Morning shift; On call
