Our team is growing! Wellington Dupont Public Affairs (WD) is seeking a highly motivated, dynamic member to join our team as a Consultant. Based in our Ottawa office and reporting to our Executive Vice President of Federal Government Relations, this position will support our clients on federal government relations and our firm’s presence and public affairs activities in the nation’s capital.
Thesuccessful candidatewill contribute to a growing and dynamic team with active client engagement, media monitoring and analysis, research and writing, as well as operational and administrative support. They will contribute to the firm’s active presence on Parliament Hill by supporting clients’ government relations initiatives by engaging directly with key federal government decision makers, including Ministers, Members of Parliament, Senators, political staff, and the senior ranks of the public service, while working to build and strengthen the WD’s existing network of relationships.
Key Responsibilities
- Organizing, preparing for, and participating in client meetings, including scheduling, agenda development, note-taking, and progress monitoring.
- Organizing, preparing for, and participating in meetings between clients and the federal government, as well as relevant third-party stakeholders, including scheduling, agenda development, preparatory work and background briefings, note-taking, and progress monitoring.
- Monitoring developments with respect to federal politics, public policy, and public affairs of relevance to clients and to WD – including in the media, in Parliament, within government, and through other sources.
- Undertaking research and making inquiries in support of clients’ interests and objectives, and providing informative briefings and evidence-based analysis.
- Supporting strategic planning and the development of outreach plans, stakeholder maps, and critical path strategies in support of client objectives.
- Drafting correspondence, briefing and communications materials, and other documents in support of client federal government relations initiatives.
- Providing support to clients for public-facing engagements, including events, media appearances, and appearances in front of Parliamentary committees.
- Supporting the development of new business opportunities for WD and contributing to the promotion and growth of WD’s brand and reputation.
- Ensuring compliance with all laws, regulations, rules, and other guidelines governing the conduct of federal lobbying and federal government relations activities.
- Providing occasional support with respect to government relations and public affairs activities in other jurisdictions.
- Other general and administrative duties as required.
Required Qualifications
- Previous experience (at least two to three years; more is preferred) working on the staff of an elected federal politician (Minister, M.P., Senator) or providing direct support to a senior-level public service executive; at a federal government relations or public affairs firm; or in an in-house government relations, outreach, advocacy, or public affairs role.*
- Ability to register as a Consultant Lobbyist under the Lobbying Act.
- Undergraduate studies relating to politics and public policy, business and economics, journalism and communications, or other social sciences and humanities fields.
- Strong interest in federal politics and public affairs as well as a demonstrated track record of political engagement or participation in public affairs or public policy activities.
- Well-developed research, analysis, and writing skills, as well as proven strategic planning and project management experience.
- Outgoing and collaborative personality, with confident presentation and public-speaking skills, and an interest in developing your network across the federal government.
- Ability to handle fast-paced and at-times stressful work environments, and to work constructively with people of differing personality types and political views.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, iWork, Google Workspace, Adobe Creative Suite, or other applications for word processing, spreadsheet and presentation development, e‑mail and calendar management, and graphic design, as well as experience using a variety of online meeting platforms including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet.
*Note: Equivalent experience in highly similar roles may also be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of an undergraduate degree, particularly with a major or concentration in politics and public policy, business and economics, journalism and communications, or other social sciences and humanities fields.
- Ability to read, write, or converse in French.
- Existing network of federal government contacts.
- Previous successful federal government relations or business development experience.
- Familiarity with or exposure to social media management, media relations, or event planning in a professional setting.
