The City of Victoria is seeking a proactive and collaborative Communications and Engagement Coordinator to join our team. This position works with various departments to help residents access clear information and meaningfully participate in City programs, services and initiatives.
At its core, this role involves planning and delivering strategic communications and engagement initiatives. You’ll use a wide range of traditional and digital tools and tactics to ensure information, events and engagement opportunities are inclusive and accessible.
You’ll monitor emerging issues and provide support to leadership with briefings, presentations, advice and information. WORK FROM HOME: The successful candidate for this posting may be eligible for participation in a hybrid, work from home arrangement in alignment with the City’s Work from Home Policy. Such arrangements are determined with each employee and subject to change based on operational needs and policy direction.
Provide engagement and communications advice to internal client groups. Plan, develop and implement a variety of engagement plans and communications projects to support City programs services, and initiatives.
Work is generated by annual objectives, departmental work plans, requests from Council, operational demands, emerging communications issues or is assigned by supervisor.
Work is reviewed through meetings with supervisor.
Issues such as major expenditures or deviations from policy are referred to supervisor.
Physical Effort: Normal.
Mental Effort: Deal with complaints and negative comments. (rare) Meet multiple deadlines. (frequent) Short periods of intense concentration while working on communications issues. (often)
Visual/Auditory Effort: Focus on a variety of source data and computer for long periods. (often)

Organize and prioritize work with excellent time management and organizational skills and ability to adapt to changing priorities.
Understand and apply the techniques of engagement strategies, communications planning and coordination, public consultation, project management and event management.
Provide technical guidance and advice to user departments.
Research and compose communications materials.
Working level operation of City word processing, spreadsheet and communications specialty software.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies.
Represent the City to the public and outside agencies.
Degree in Communications or Journalism. (4 years)
3 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
Experience in a local government or public institution setting is an asset.
