Hours Of Employment
- 6 hours/day; 10-month position annually
- Normal hours of work are from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM
Basic Function
- A dispatch and clerical function that includes the ability to make decisions based on a substantive knowledge of school bus regulations, policies and practices and the ability to communicate this to drivers.
- Design and implement school bus routes using the division’s school bus routing software.
- Additionally, the position supports a broad range of clerical functions requiring computer and software skills.
- Maintains clear and effective communication via radio, telephone and email with Division and Contract personnel as well as parents, daycares and others to meet the objectives of the Transportation Department.
- Be familiar with all Pembina Trails school bus routes and act as a spare driver when required.
Primary Duties
- Create bus trips and compile routes using the department routing software. Be proficient in the use of this software suite.
- Act as a spare driver whenever required.
- Create, prepare or update electronic documents, tables, spreadsheets etc. used in the day to day operation of the department.
- Perform dispatching duties as required and be responsible for start and/or end of day activities. Be familiar with and able to apply emergent situation protocols.
- Assists other staff in maintaining driver qualification file as required under the National Safety Code and Divisional Policies.
- Manage field trip approvals in conjunction with other staff, including data entry.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- Ability to maintain discretion with respect to sensitive or confidential information.
- Grade 12 with applicable post-secondary training.
- School Bus Driver licence and an excellent driving record as evidenced by a driver’s abstract to be submitted with application.
- Must be able to act as a spare driver with the physical ability to safely operate ALL vehicles in the fleet.
- Experience in a dispatch or supervisory setting which includes a demonstrated ability and/or experience in dispatching or in a related supervisory role in a fast-paced, dynamic, high-stakes environment.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and maintain records and files. Ability to effectively use word processing, spreadsheets, email and other proprietary software. Possess basic skills and some intermediate skills in the use of Word, Excel and Outlook. Ability to develop advanced skills in the use of Transfinder Routefinder Plus software suite is required.
- Ability to work independently demonstrating sound judgment with strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Must be physically able to conduct school bus evacuations.
- Working knowledge of school bus operation issues, standards and regulations.
- Working knowledge of special needs students as they relate to school bus operations.

- To perform other related duties as assigned or requested by the Assistant Manager of Transportation.
