A community-focused organization in Kamloops is looking for a Child Safety Team Assistant. This role involves providing administrative and practical support to social workers, assisting families to achieve their goals, and developing intervention plans based on the LMO Michif Practice Model. The ideal candidate will have a diploma in social services and experience working with Indigenous peoples. Competitive pay will be discussed during the hiring process.
Position Overview:
The Child Safety Team Assistants will provide administrative and practical support with day-to-day casework of delegated files on the Child Safety Team. They will work alongside the delegated social workers to support families in achieving their identified goals to keep children in the home and/or support reunification, which also includes reconnections to their family, natural supports, cultural identity, and community. The Child Safety Team Assistants will conduct their duties in a manner that adheres to the LMO Michif Practice Model.
Primary Duties
· Participates in the development, modification, and evaluation of client plans in line with the Michif Practice Model in collaboration with a family’s natural support network and case management team. In collaboration with a delegated social worker, the Michif Family Support Worker evaluates the effectiveness of the plans, reports on a family’s progress, and discusses related concerns with the delegated social worker to resolve identified problems and move towards defined goals and objectives.
· Regularly participates in integrated case management meetings to report clients’ activities and progress.
· In collaboration with a delegated social worker, the Michif Family Support Worker gathers information relevant to the family’s needs through interviewing, observing behaviour, meeting with family members, service providers and other significant connections to the family by using a variety of strategies identified in the LMO Michif Practice Model.
· Provides intensive, consistent one-to-one direct support services to teach and strengthen basic life skills such as maintaining a household, shopping within a limited budget, and cooking nutritious meals, securing identification documents, exploring employment and educational readiness programs and opportunities, managing emotions such as anger, problem solving, conflict resolution and developing healthy relationships with others.
· Supports families with parenting skills, including parent-child interaction, child development, discipline and guidance, and behaviour management.
· Develops and implements issue-specific intervention plans within the LMO Michif Practice Model and in consultation with a delegated social worker.
· Supports families to identify hardships and develop plans to overcome them.
· Supports families in strengthening their natural support network and reconnecting with family, their cultural identity and community. Supports the involvement of identified supports within their plan.
· Outlines services provided and, in consultation with a delegated social worker, provides information on and referral to other community service providers, resources and professionals as required.
· Liaises with and/or promotes the interests of families with other community service providers, professionals as required.
· Assesses the needs and resources of individuals seeking housing support and supports individuals in locating, securing, and maintaining accessible and affordable housing, including obtaining required documentation and facilitating communication with landlords
· Assesses an individual’s need for start-up/move-in costs such as first/last months rent, utility set-up, and other one-time-only start-up expenses. Supports individuals with housing applications, subsidy forms and other documentation needed to secure housing.
· Follows up with individuals post-move-in to ensure they are well supported and prevent the loss of housing
· Maintains regular records (and documents in ICM as required) and provides reports to the delegated social worker and team leader as required
· Prepares payment requests for purchases/payments related to a delegated file. Provides payment request to Social Worker, TL and ED (as required) and submits to the finance department.
· Submits payment information into ICM/MIS for approval.
· Other duties as assigned or required
Qualifications:
· Diploma in the field of Human or Social Services or related field
· 2 years related experience working with peoples of Indigenous ancestry
· Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and community
Working Conditions:
· Travel in this position is required
· Potential for violence in the workplace
· Comfortable with supporting parents in their individual home settings
· Ability to perform the requirements of the job, which include working independently with Metis parents who may experience cognitive delays and/or challenges with substance misuse, mental health, or other trauma-related behaviours
· Supervision received – frequent consultation with direct supervisor with directive and regular review of the work performed. Must comply with the expectations of the Michif Practice Model.
Conditions of Employment:
· Must be able to obtain and maintain a Criminal Records Check
· Must consent to a Prior Contact Check
· Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid BC Driver’s License

Compensation:
· $27.48 – 30.96 per hour. Classification: Delegated Program Assistant (PSJEP Grid 9) of the BCGEU Indigenous Services Collective Agreement Wage Grids. Benefits & pension following a successful 90-day probationary period.
