Yukon Bureau of Statistics (YBS) is a branch of the Yukon government (YG) in the Department of Finance. YBS helps governments, businesses and residents of Yukon make informed decisions with the provision of timely and reliable statistical information. The Bureau collects, analyses and publishes statistical information, and works on statistical research projects and data modelling. YBS collaborates with and assists YG departments and external clients in providing professional expertise and support in data collection, analysis and statistical research. The Bureau also collaborates with Statistics Canada, other federal departments, and provincial / territorial statistical agencies on matters of mutual interest.

The opportunity

YBS is currently looking for a passionate Associate Data Scientist to join our team to provide day-to-day support for programming and troubleshooting of the survey application, web scraping, data validation, statistical analysis using Excel and Python/R, and reporting.

Essential Qualifications
  • A university degree in economics, mathematics, statistics, or a related field.
  • Experience in programming software for surveys and statistical data analysis.
  • A solid understanding of survey design principles and conventions.
  • Advanced skills in technical writing in English, as well as in designing surveys.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience working with Python/R programming.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

Additional Information

Job requirements: Remote work is not an option for this position. Successful candidates must be physically present at the office in Whitehorse, Yukon on regular workdays.
