SAC in partnership with the faculty, staff, and students of UNB strives to provide support, ensure equal opportunity, and create an accessible, inclusive community for UNB students.

Salary Range: $52,933 - $68,818 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Director, the Assistive Technologist ensures equitable access and support for students, faculty, and staff who rely on assistive technology (AT) to learn, teach, and work effectively. This may include assessing individual AT needs of students, faculty, and staff, providing training on AT and/or providing education and guidance on the use of AT.

  • Evaluate, assess and make recommendations on specific hardware, software, and devices based on individual needs.
  • Collaborate with Accessibility Advisors, primary health care providers, and faculty or supervisors to integrate technology into accommodation plans.
  • Install, configure, and ensure proper functioning of assistive technology across various platforms.
  • Maintain case files, manage assistive technology plans, and prepare reports and statistics as required.
  • Assist students with disabilities to guide them through the process of securing funding for assistive technology.
  • Determine appropriate equipment and software based on provincial and program guidelines.
  • Write letters of recommendation and complete application information to support requests for equipment and software.
  • Train students, staff, and other users on effective use of assistive technology.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with assistive technology and equipment.
  • Support students, faculty, and staff in obtaining alternative formats or e-texts for non-accessible print materials when required.
  • Monitor and maintain the appropriate use and upkeep of assistive technology devices and equipment at the Student Accessibility Centre on both Fredericton and Moncton campuses.
  • Provide additional support during peak exam periods, including updates and maintenance as required.
  • Create and maintain print and web-based guides and instructional aids related to assistive technology resources and services for students with disabilities.
  • Maintain and update the SAC SharePoint and webpage as needed.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies and maintain awareness and understanding of best practices and legal requirements.
  • Deliver informational and training sessions to faculties and departments to increase understanding and use of assistive technology in the classroom and workplace.
  • Participate in university committees related to accommodation and accessibility services.
What You Bring
  • Undergraduate degree with a major in education, social sciences or technology.
  • 3-5 years experience working with persons with disabilities.
  • Training and experience with individual assessment practices in assistive technology software and equipment including but not limited to text to speech, dictation software, note taking applications, organizational software programs, accessibility with Office 365.
Additional Strengths
  • Certification (degree or certificate program) in assistive technology is a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with best practices for inclusion including universal design for learning.
  • Experience with accessibility settings and features in equipment/software.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, communication and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment, as well as independently.
  • Ability to work in an environment with competing demands, high work volume and quantity of information which may cause stress.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the issues affecting persons with disabilities and experience working with persons with disabilities are an asset.
  • Displays appreciation for and recognizes the value of different opinions, roles, experiences, cultures, and backgrounds.
