Overview

The Department of Classics at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The starting date for this position is August 1, 2026.

We seek a broadly trained classicist with a strong record and promising trajectory of research, whose interests are focused on archaic Greek poetry, Hellenistic poetry, or Greek philosophy. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in ancient Greek and classical humanities (classics in translation) and should draw upon the candidate’s own research interests in the design of these offerings. Candidates may also have the opportunity to teach Latin.

Program Information

The Department of Classics offers B.A. degrees in Latin, Latin and Greek, and Classical Humanities, as well as M.A. degrees in Latin and Latin and Greek. It enjoys close ties with the Department of History, which awards the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Ancient History, and with the Department of English, the program in Comparative Literature, the Department of Philosophy, and the Department of Art History and Archaeology. The University of Maryland is located four miles from Washington, D.C., and 32 miles from Baltimore, MD. Minimum Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Classics or a related field is required at the time of appointment. Teaching experience at the college or university level is required, including courses in ancient Greek language and literature, as well as classics in translation.
