Job description
Overview

Animal Services is a centralised unit that supports research at UNSW by managing animal care and facilities across the Kensington and Randwick campuses. Our mission is to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare and ethical compliance while supporting the needs of researchers.

Role title: Animal Technician

Employment Type: Full time (38 hours per week) • Duration: 1 year contract parental leave November 2025 to November 2026 • Remuneration: Level 3 $76,959-$85,877 (depending on experience) 17% super • Location: Kensington NSW

Why Your Role Matters

This role reports to the Animal Services Manager and has no direct reports. While the recruitment is starting now, the role begins in November 2025.

Responsibilities
  • Provide daily care and husbandry for a variety of animals, ensuring appropriate nutrition, hygiene, enrichment, and environmental monitoring
  • Monitor and report on animal wellbeing; maintain precise records
  • Support cleaning and maintenance of DAFF & OGTR-certified areas including cage cleaning, preparation, and sterilisation
  • Collaborate with team members to meet daily objectives; weekend and public holiday roster participation may be required
  • Support research staff and assist other team members as needed
Qualifications / Who You Are
  • Completion (or progress towards completion) of a TAFE Certificate, Associate Diploma or equivalent qualifications in Animal Studies, Animal Health, Veterinary Science or Animal Technology
  • Demonstrated experience in animal handling and care of laboratory animals, particularly rodents, rabbits, guinea pigs and sheep
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting
  • Demonstrated record-keeping skills with high attention to detail
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and organisational skills
  • Competence in using databases and Microsoft Office
Additional Details

This is a one-year full-time contract to cover parental leave.

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position; candidates must hold full rights to work in Australia.

This position is based full-time at the UNSW Kensington campus with typical hours of 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM (start times can be adjusted to accommodate individual availability).
