Position Overview

Reporting to the Head of Health, Safety, Environment and Communities and working Monday to Friday in Calgary, AB, or Yellowknife, NT, the Advisor, Environment – Projects and Closure Planning is responsible for leading the reclamation and closure, securities, and mine life‑cycle environmental planning at the Ekati Diamond Mine. Duties include managing technical work and giving regulatory, permitting, and technical advice. Regular travel to the Ekati mine site, Yellowknife, Indigenous communities, and general travel as business needs indicate will be an ongoing requirement.

Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Lead the development, evaluation, and refinement of reclamation and closure, securities, and mine life‑cycle planning programs in accordance with regulatory environment requirements (e.g., Water Licence conditions), business objectives, stakeholder engagement, and Arctic Canadian’s Sustainable Development Policy;
  • Ensure reclamation and closure, and mine life‑cycle planning programs conform to short‑ and long‑term program requirements and goals;
  • Manage technical consultants, including the development and execution of field and office‑based scopes of work;
  • Support field and office‑based work associated with reclamation and closure, and mine life‑cycle optimisation;
  • Review consultant developed technical reports on reclamation and closure, securities, mine planning, geochemical and water quality modelling programmes;
  • Manage and report on project deadlines, completion, and budgets;
  • Calculation, negotiation and financial management of mine‑related securities;
  • Support mining operations through the provision of technical and regulatory guidance;
  • Support permitting of new developments and changes to existing developments;
  • Development of business cases to support advancement of capital projects;
  • Develop and maintain work procedures, health and safety procedures, and risk assessments for reclamation and closure, and mine planning programmes;
  • Ensure effective community and regulatory engagement on reclamation and closure, securities, and mine planning programmes;
  • Timely review and submission of regulatory reports and response to stakeholder comments (e.g., Interim Reclamation and Closure reporting).
Education / Experience
  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Engineering (B.Eng.).
  • Five years of directly related technical and/or project execution experience.
  • Knowledge of regulations, monitoring requirements, and technical methods specific to reclamation and closure, and mine life‑cycle planning.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in the mining industry, working in northern Canada, an understanding of the northern regulatory environment, experience with reclamation and closure planning, and experience with mine life‑cycle optimisation.

Additional Information
