POSITION: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) Justice Support Worker

DEPARTMENT: Social Development

LOCATION: Timmins

TERM: Full-Time

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Restorative Justice Coordinator, the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD) Justice Support Worker will provide comprehensive services to Indigenous people who may be affected by FASD and with a confirmed FASD diagnosis who become involved with the criminal justice system. The FASD Justice Support Worker will support Indigenous people involved with the criminal justice system who are suspected of having FASD with accessing FASD assessments and diagnoses. Due to the complex needs of FASD affected individuals, the FASD Justice Support Worker provides intensive, wrap-around services to support their clients in navigating and understanding the criminal justice system, and in particular, the fly-in court system process.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Post Secondary Diploma or Degree in either Social Work, Mental Health, or a combination of work experience and education in a relevant field
  • Experience working with vulnerable or at-risk populations including special needs
  • Experience and knowledge of Aboriginal issues and the current legal system
  • Knowledge of the Mushkegowuk traditional history and lifestyles
  • Excellent oral communications skills, presentation and listening skills
  • Must possess a genuine interest in seeing the youth develop and succeed
  • Excellent writing and reporting skills
  • Knowledge and proficiency in computers (e.g.: Microsoft Office applications and Internet)
  • Must possess a high level of professionalism and discretion
  • Must have excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate in the Cree language will be considered an asset
  • Must have team building skills, analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Must have Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License
