Job description
What you will do:

The Refrigeration Design Engineer supports the iREF Middle East and Africa Design and Engineering team by assisting with pre‑ and post‑sales activities related to designing, supplying, and building Industrial Refrigeration Systems and iREF equipment project opportunities.

Presales activities include, but are not limited to: reviewing tender documentation provided by the customer or consultant, conducting site surveys, participating in technical meetings with the customer or consultant, developing initial technical calculations and system concept design, selecting Industrial Refrigeration equipment, estimating the cost of all components for the iREF system, preparing cost book quotation text, and creating process flow diagrams. This role will receive direction, coaching, and support from the Regional Engineering Manager and sales leadership on presale needs and expectations.

Post‑sales activities include delivering projects that are profitable, accurate, on time, within the scope of the contract, and aligned with customer expectations. The Refrigeration Design Engineer will develop and review detailed engineering solutions and documentation, guide CAD engineers in preparing technical submittals to communicate design configuration, operating, and installation requirements to customers, consultants, Johnson Controls operation teams, and necessary subcontractors. Responsibilities also include reviewing technical documentation and drawings produced internally and by our suppliers, developing design briefs and sequences of operation, providing technical support during startup and commissioning, and troubleshooting.

The Refrigeration Design Engineer, in addition to presales and post‑sales support, will provide technical support and assistance to the iREF MEA AfterMarket team on projects related to retrofitting or upgrading existing refrigeration systems.

The role works with assigned sales and operations teams to maintain an effective balance between customer satisfaction and project financial results when performing presales and/or post‑sales duties.

How you will do it:
  • Supports detailed estimating of projects during presales activities, presenting findings to clients together with Sales Managers.
  • Technically leads presales activities from reviewing tender documents to securing the project.
  • Assists as needed in developing the customer’s business case for the conceptual solution.
  • Provides technical support, selections, and estimating assistance to Sales managers for new projects and AfterMarket retrofit projects during the presales phase.
  • Provides input to the sales management organization for opportunity prioritization and qualification.
  • Prepares customer proposals, quote letters for assigned projects, cost book estimates, timeframes, schedules, process flow diagrams, and initial layouts together with the assigned CAD engineer.
  • Conducts handover meetings to the project management team when a project is secured.
  • Proactively supports value‑added sales.
  • Validates assumptions made during the proposal and presales phase, builds detailed cost estimates and scopes of work for assigned projects in conjunction with sales, reviews final proposals and other customer communication documents, and assists with any design work required.
  • Secures the best available pricing for selected equipment in cooperation with Supply Chain Department members.
  • Performs proactive risk assessments for projects.
  • Tracks project cost for all assigned projects, looking for ways to optimize the design and achieve cost optimisation.
  • Performs site surveys in existing buildings to inspect overall operation of control systems and unique job considerations for construction.
  • Communicates project engineering progress to all managers that need to know.
  • Completes detailed design and engineering works during the process.
  • Reviews all technical design documentation before issuing to customers and the operation team.
  • Performs refrigeration‑related calculations such as heat‑load calculations, pipe sizing, etc.
  • Generates technical content, purchase orders for all material and equipment, and selects orders while working closely with all parties (operations manager, procurement managers, suppliers).
  • Other activities and responsibilities may be defined individually.
What we look for:
Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent through experience.
  • Five years’ experience in designing industrial refrigeration systems or large complex commercial refrigeration systems.
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office suite (especially Word, Excel, and Visio) and basic Windows OS environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage a large and diverse number of projects with professionalism, cooperation, and persistence.
