Duties and responsibilities
  • Deliver the required curriculum; demonstrating accurate and up-to-date knowledge of curriculum and subject.
  • Plan and deliver quality lessons to motivate students, creating and utilising appropriate materials and a classroom environment that caters for different learning needs.
  • Show written evidence of planning and preparation by establishing and maintaining records of curriculum and year plans, attendance, teaching resources, and assessment plans.
  • Teach students according to their individual needs using appropriate teaching strategies that meet students’ abilities, such as late‑entering students, ESL, low academic ability, gifted and talented, etc.
  • Set, mark, record and report on the academic development, progress and attainment of students, and use assessment to ensure the curriculum meets each student’s needs.
  • Display competence in using media and technology.
  • Promote the general progress and well‑being of students and provide guidance on educational matters.
  • Perform clerical duties associated with textbooks, instructional supplies, equipment, student reports, records and attendance.
  • Prepare a daily programme, including lesson plans, that shall be available for substitute teachers.
  • Contribute to the monitoring of student outcomes, programme effectiveness, and the assessment and reporting of individual students.
  • Contribute to the implementation of curriculum improvement and development.
Communication
  • Communicate with persons outside the school where appropriate (e.g., Ministry of Education officials).
  • Communicate and meet with parents regularly, promoting the GEMS philosophy and core values; keep parents informed of students’ progress while respecting confidentiality.
  • Promote community understanding of the school, encourage parental involvement, and facilitate interaction between staff, students, parents and community members.
  • Initiate, facilitate and engage in appropriate communication and interaction between staff, parents, school and community.
Professional development
  • Take part in the school’s appraisal procedures.
  • Take part in further training and development to improve one’s own teaching.
  • Where appropriate, take part in the appraisal and professional development of others.
  • Participate in appraisal and performance‑management procedures and continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Work alongside colleagues on the preparation and development of teaching materials, resources, courses of study and pastoral care.
  • Participate in and lead co‑curricular and extra‑curricular programmes, promoting good working relationships through active leadership and sharing of ideas, materials and experiences.
Health, safety and discipline
  • Monitor and supervise safe and appropriate student behaviour; plan and implement strategies to encourage self‑discipline and manage disruptive behaviour.
  • Assist in planning and organising school events and functions (e.g., inter‑house competitions, concerts, school plays, prize days).
  • Initiate efforts beyond the typical workday where required.
  • Manage a well‑rounded educational programme, directing groups in classes, assisting students individually and supervising extra‑curricular activities.
  • Advise and correct students when necessary in the classroom or on school premises; keep the head informed concerning student behaviour and discipline.
  • Plan all excursions with the head, including transportation, adult supervision, parent consent forms and scheduling; ensure a first‑aid kit is included and the class roll is checked before return.
  • Maintain the physical environment of the classroom, including display, neatness, order, ventilation, temperature, lighting, and care of furniture, books, supplies and equipment.
  • Report immediately all accidents to the head using the forms supplied by the school.
