Bookkeeper / Accounts Preparation Semi‑Senior
Streets Chartered Accountants (Brighton Office) is seeking a capable, highly experienced Bookkeeper/Accounts Preparation professional to support our growing team during a very busy period and beyond. This is a full‑time remote role supporting UK clients with bookkeeping, VAT returns, self‑assessment tax returns, and accounts preparation.
About The Role
The role requires someone who can hit the ground running, work independently, and manage both simple and complex workloads with minimal training.
Key Responsibilities
Bookkeeping & Accounting
- Perform end‑to‑end bookkeeping for a portfolio of UK clients.
- Prepare VAT returns accurately and in line with HMRC guidelines.
- Prepare self‑assessment tax returns (UK experience preferred but not essential if tax experience exists).
- Support with accounts preparation, including working from bank statements, spreadsheets, and other source documents.
Accounts Preparation & Compliance
- Assist in preparing limited company statutory accounts (training provided where required).
- Use MyWorkPapers for smaller limited companies where appropriate.
- Work closely with the Brighton team to take jobs from initial bookkeeping all the way to final review stage.
Client Engagement & Queries
- Handle client queries professionally via email and Teams.
- Escalate more complex queries to the partners as needed.
- Build confidence to interact directly with clients once familiar with the processes.
Collaboration & Workflow
- Work closely with management, who will provide oversight and guidance as they transition into a senior role.
- Collaborate with the partners as escalation points.
- Attend remote meetings and maintain strong communication with the Brighton office.
Software & Tools
Primary Software (Required Or Easily Learnable)
- Xero (main platform)
- QuickBooks
- Iris (accounts production)
Additional Tools
- Excel (bank statement imports, data manipulation)
- MyWorkPapers (occasionally)
Prior experience with every tool is not mandatory. Strong Xero skills and the ability to learn new systems quickly are essential.
Must‑Have Experience
- Strong bookkeeping background.
- Experience preparing VAT returns.
- Tax experience (even if not UK‑specific).
- Ability to prepare accounts to trial balance and assist with statutory accounts.
- Capability to start quickly with minimal hand‑holding.
Preferred Qualifications
- SAIPA / SAICA / or equivalent.
- Part‑qualified or fully qualified accountants are welcome, especially if comfortable doing hands‑on, nitty‑gritty work.
Competencies
- Fast learner, especially with accounting software.
- Comfortable managing workload independently in a remote environment.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Proactive communicator.
- Willing to do both basic and advanced work—aligned with the Streets culture that everyone gets involved at all levels.
