Job description

The Enrichment Officer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating enrichment programmes that enhance the welfare and natural behaviours of all animals in the Singapore Oceanarium. This hands‑on role is crucial in upholding the highest standards of animal welfare. The officer will work closely with animal care teams to ensure that enrichment activities promote the physical and psychological wellbeing of our aquatic animals.

Responsibilities
  • Implement species‑appropriate enrichment programmes that encourage natural behaviours and promote animal welfare in accordance with Singapore Oceanarium standards.
  • Design, construct, and maintain safe enrichment devices and environmental modifications suitable for various aquatic species and environment, using appropriate materials and construction techniques.
  • Monitor and document animal responses to enrichment activities, maintaining detailed records for welfare assessment and programme evaluation.
  • Collaborate with animal care teams and veterinary staff to integrate enrichment activities with daily care routines.
  • Conduct regular assessments of enrichment effectiveness and modify programmes based on behavioural observations and welfare indicators.
  • Support public education initiatives by developing enrichment demonstrations and interpretive materials that highlight natural behaviours and conservation messages.
  • Any other duties related to animal welfare and enrichment initiatives as assigned by the Conservation & Science department.
Requirements
  • Degree in Animal Behaviour, Life Sciences, Marine Biology, Zoology or relevant discipline. Candidates with animal enrichment or zoo/aquarium experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant work experience in animal care, enrichment, or related field.
  • Scuba diving certification of Open Water Dive and above.
  • Confident to work in an aquatic environment.
  • Strong understanding of animal behaviour principles and welfare assessment techniques.
  • Creative problem‑solving skills and the ability to work with hand tools and basic construction techniques.
  • Strong observational and record‑keeping abilities with attention to detail.
  • Able to perform shift work, including on weekends and public holidays.
