Job description
What the role is:

We are looking for individuals with passion and interest in understanding and predicting weather and climate. You will be working in a fast‑paced environment that requires the ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders simultaneously. We provide advisories and early warnings of meteorological, environmental, and geophysical hazards to the general public and key customers such as the civil aviation sector. We are equipped with state‑of‑the‑art computer weather prediction models and advanced weather monitoring tools such as Doppler weather radar, satellite reception systems, and wind profiler radars to support forecasting operations.

There are opportunities to be involved in various aspects of the meteorological service value‑chain, including operational forecasting shift duties, data analysis, and the development and implementation of meteorological applications, products, systems, and infrastructure to support weather forecast operations and service delivery, as well as management of climate data.

Professional training in meteorology will be provided if needed. You will also have opportunities to participate in international conferences and seminars, and may pursue other areas such as climate and weather research where postgraduate scholarships in Atmospheric/Climate Science or related studies may be possible.

What you will be working on:
Meteorological Systems and Infrastructure
  • Oversee and coordinate the implementation and maintenance of the meteorological observation network and systems to ensure optimal performance.
  • Conduct market research on available systems and technology and engage with users to define requirements for upgrades or new observation networks.
  • Prepare quotation/tender specifications, evaluate responses, and recommend award.
  • Monitor and manage contractor performance.
  • Coordinate with internal and external users, including international organisations, for the provision of data/products and exchange.
  • Undertake site surveys regarding optimal sites for installation of observation systems; liaise with authorities on licenses/permits, coordinate with land owners regarding tenancy agreements, power/networking/cabling issues, and civil/electrical works.
Climate Data Management
  • Manage national climate data and associated metadata.
  • Generate and provide climate products and services to private and public users.
  • Conduct and manage quality control of climate observation data and relevant processes.
  • Analyse and study long‑term climate patterns and trends.
  • Monitor, analyse and record recent local climate conditions.
  • Develop and maintain software tools and dashboards for climate analysis, display and generation of climate products.
  • Prepare and publish annual climate statistics and reports.
Forecasting and Meteorological Products Development
  • Operational forecasting (on shift work).
  • Analyse data from computer weather prediction models and meteorological observation systems such as Doppler weather radar, satellite systems and wind profilers.
  • Conduct research studies to advance our understanding and prediction capabilities in tropical weather and climate.
  • Analyse geospatial data from models and observation systems.
  • Perform satellite image processing, spatial and geo‑statistical data analysis to gain better understanding of tropical weather.
  • Design and develop weather forecasting tools and applications to improve work processes.
  • Develop and enhance meteorological products to meet the evolving needs of stakeholders and customers such as the aviation industry.
What we are looking for:

The job might be for you if you possess the following:

  • Honours degree in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Remote Sensing, Geoscience, or related fields.
  • Good command of spoken and written English and excellent communication skills.
  • Good knowledge in Information Technology, with working experience in scientific programming and development of applications.
  • Experience in working with remote sensing data, as well as knowledge in statistical packages or machine learning/deep learning algorithms.
  • Able to perform shift work including on weekends and public holidays.

As part of the shortlisting process for this role, you may be required to complete a medical declaration and/or undergo further assessment.
