Job Description

You will be part of the clinical microbiology lab in SGH which plays a key role in the laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases. You will perform laboratory tests, assist in preparing various types of media and receive and process specimens, including carrying out specialised investigations of patient samples. In addition, you will perform on‑going quality control checks to ensure test results are precise and accurate.

You will be leading a section which focuses on bacterial genomics. The results will contribute to the understanding of disease processes, infection prevention and control, and public health.

You will mentor and coach junior staff and assist in establishing, implementing and updating departmental policies and procedures.

Qualifications
  • Degree in Biomedical Science, Life Sciences or its equivalent
  • Able to work in a fast paced environment, both independently and in a team
  • Able to work in a responsible, meticulous and efficient manner
  • Possess good communication skills
  • Able to work rotating shifts
  • PhD in a relevant discipline (biomedical science, bioinformatics, computational biology, data science or related field)
  • Masters in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience
  • Degree in Biomedical Science, Biological Science, Medical Technology or equivalent with minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Good command of English, communications and interpersonal skills are important
  • Proficiency in scripting and statistical language (eg Perl, Python, R, particularly in the use of packages such as biopython)
  • Prior experience in wet lab and bioinformatics analysis of human/microbial genomes, metagenomics will be an advantage
  • Knowledge in high performance computing (HPC) and cloud computing
