Key Responsibilities:

  • Safety and Compliance: Lead student and staff training sessions to promote understanding and adherence to laboratory safety protocols and proper equipment handling. Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE) standards by assisting with the development and regular updates of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and conducting thorough risk assessments. Actively participate in safety committees, execute fire warden and spill response duties, and perform routine lab safety inspections to mitigate hazards.
  • Laboratory Operations: Manage maintenance and technical troubleshooting of laboratory and shared equipment, coordinating prompt servicing and repairs with qualified vendors to minimise downtime. Oversee daily operations across assigned laboratories, ensuring all equipment and facilities operate efficiently to support academic and research demands.
  • Educational Support: Prepare and organise materials and logistics for practical classes and Continuing Education and Training (CET) courses, including those conducted at off‑site venues. Assist in student assessments, exam invigilation and internal audits to maintain academic integrity. Provide clear briefings and ongoing support to Teaching Assistants regarding safety and operational protocols, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
  • Facilities and Resource Management: Collaborate closely with the Team Lead to maintain communal laboratory spaces, optimise utilisation of available resources such as space and equipment, and obtain competitive quotations for new equipment purchases, ensuring cost‑effectiveness and alignment with departmental needs.
  • Events and Outreach: Support the department's outreach efforts by managing digital platforms, including web content, social media and newsletters. Facilitate the planning and execution of academic and community events, whether conducted in‑person, virtually or via hybrid formats. Offer technical assistance for event logistics, including audiovisual equipment setup and integration of innovative technologies into educational content. Contribute creatively to social and festive activities that enhance departmental community spirit.

This dynamic role offers the opportunity to contribute to a vibrant academic community, promoting a culture of safety, operational excellence and educational support in a lab setting.
