Job Description:

What’s the role

If you are driven by a curious mindset, coupled with a passion for chemical analysis, this could be your opportunity to learn and make a significant contribution to Shell’s entry into the polycarbonate industry. You will play an important role in improving the quality of life of millions and contribute directly to Shell’s technology development and ultimately to its bottom line.

What you’ll be doing

You are expected to perform qualitative and quantitative physico-chemical analysis by following industry standard or internal test methods in a safe and compliant manner. The samples include aqueous and hydrocarbon samples such as petrochemical raw materials, process intermediates and finished products (fine chemicals and polymers).

The techniques employed include:

  • chromatography (GC & GC-MS, HPLC, GPC and IC)
  • atomic (AES/OES) and molecular spectroscopy (UV-Vis, FT-IR)
  • optical (color – liquid and solid, microscopy)
  • thermal (DSC, TGA) and rheological (melt flow and dilute solution)
  • physical property (injection molding and impact strength)
  • titration

The sample preparation involves weighing, dissolving, diluting, drying, ashing, digesting, centrifuging, filtering, etc., as well as adjunct activities (catalysts and additives preparation). The role provides an opportunity to get exposed to all aspects of laboratory operations:

  • equipment (routine maintenance & occasional minor troubleshooting)
  • quality (calibration & validation)
  • data (excel & LIMS)
  • samples (receipt, sub-sampling, safekeeping / storage)
  • methods (QA/QC and occasional assistance in development)
  • inventory (chemicals and consumable usage tracking & ordering)
  • training (self and others) and
  • vendor (scheduling & coordinating PM/CM visits)

You are expected to perform all activities diligently and safely and work as part of a small team. You are expected to follow good laboratory practices including cleanliness of work area and instruments. Though the normal operation is expected to involve only day shift during weekdays, occasionally the role would require extended hours (up to 12 hours) and weekends during plant start-up or upset conditions on an overtime basis.

What you bring

We are keen to speak with candidates who have the following:

  • Diploma in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry / Technology or equivalent
  • Experience in chemical or pharmaceutical research or manufacturing laboratory, preferably in an analytical laboratory of a chemical / petrochemical manufacturing facility
  • Fresh graduates are encouraged to apply
  • Willingness to learn new techniques, instruments and methods
