About Tamil Murasu

Started in 1935, Tamil Murasu is Singapore's only Tamil language newspaper. Tamil Murasu is the main information source for the Tamil-speaking Indian community with its coverage of wide-ranging news, from current affairs to local and foreign news, as well as the latest in sports and entertainment, in addition to its strong coverage on news from the Singapore Indian community and South Asia. The newspaper has established itself as a voice for the Tamil-speaking community in Singapore. It also has a robust digital presence with an active website. In addition, Tamil Murasu has launched the TM App in late 2024, capturing much of the content created and its social media presence is strong.

About the Role

Tamil Murasu is seeking an experienced Visual Journalist to join our newsroom. You will work with journalists and sub-editors to create original data visualisation and graphics content based on researched data related to content identified for publishing, enhancing readers' engagement.

Many stories could be accompanied by data representation. You must identify potential ideas for the presented content and search for appropriate verified data to visualise into graphics that simplify complex ideas into visuals. There will also be opportunities to work on visual feature stories based on ongoing events, themes and those you choose to present in a graphic format.

You will also assist in the layout of stories for the print version

Roles & Responsibilities

• Collaborate with journalists and sub-editors to understand the requirements and translate them into visual designs that accurately represent the underlying data, editorial angle, or product request.
• Use reliable data visualisation tools to represent the harvested data and support the content.
• Collaborate with the editorial team to ensure that interactive graphics are user-friendly, responsive, and accessible across various devices.
• Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies to continually improve and innovate our interactive content.
• Conduct research alongside writers to find/verify data sources.
• Layout pages in an interesting way to enhance engagement

Job Requirements

• Degree or Diploma in relevant course in Visual Communications or similar qualification
• At least two years of relevant experience
• Able to articulate ideas visually
• Proficiency with data visualisation and interactive web design platforms
• Proficiency in English and Tamil languages
• Familiar with the use of Tamil fonts in various software applications
• Creative individual and a self-starter who initiates and executes innovative content
• Inclination towards visual storytelling and crunching large volumes of data into visual charts, graphics and imagery
• Able to work in a fast-paced environment
• Able to work on weekends and public holidays.

This role will be on a contractual basis and will end in March 2026.
