You will mentor engineers, ensure high-quality software delivery, and collaborate with major cloud partners like Amazon and Microsoft. This role offers a distributed work environment, competitive compensation, and a focus on professional development.
Engineering Manager - Public Cloud, Python, Golang. Home Based - Americas; Home based - EMEA.
Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Our customers include leading public cloud and silicon providers and industry leaders across sectors. The company operates with global distributed collaboration, with 1200+ colleagues in 75+ countries and very few office-based roles. Teams meet two to four times yearly in person, at locations around the world, to align on strategy and execution. The company is founder-led, profitable, and growing.
We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead a team that works closely with Amazon, Microsoft, Google and other cloud partners to optimize Ubuntu for their infrastructure. Our team builds, tests, and publishes the base Ubuntu images used by millions to ensure optimal performance and security in cloud estates. We aim to deliver the best public cloud VM experience and specialized images for specific cloud purposes, while ensuring a common operating experience for users.
As an engineering manager you bring both technical and people leadership to guide your team. You will represent the team in partner engagement and be responsible for the stability and functionality that cloud users expect. You will strive to automate the delivery of existing and new Ubuntu image products across modern workloads, from web servers to GPU-accelerated AI for servers, VMs and containers.
As an engineering manager at Canonical your primary responsibility is to the people you support: ensuring they grow as engineers, do valuable work, and enjoy a positive experience at Canonical. You will lead strong engineers, provide technical leadership, and contribute to culture, delivery, and strategy/execution.
We work in Python and Golang, and expect engineering managers to be fluent in the language, architecture and components their team builds. Code reviews and architectural leadership are part of the role. The role also emphasizes healthy engineering practices, documentation, quality, and performance optimization, along with fair and clear management to ensure a high-performing team.
We consider geographical location, experience, and performance in shaping compensation worldwide. We revisit compensation annually to ensure we recognize outstanding performance. In addition to base pay, we offer a performance-driven annual bonus or commission. We provide all team members with additional benefits reflecting our values and global approach.
