Within the mission the Preclinical Research Facility is seeking an Animal Welfare Officer (RBA) to support the protection, ethical treatment, and welfare of laboratory animals in compliance with national and international regulations.

The role acts as a key reference within the facility and the Foundation for monitoring daily practices, ensuring that animal welfare standards are consistently applied and maintained. The RBA collaborates closely with the Designated Veterinarian, the OPBA, and research teams to promote a culture of responsibility and good practice. Strong communication, attention to detail, and organizational skills are essential for working effectively with scientists, technicians, and administrative staff.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure full compliance with animal welfare regulations (D.Lgs. 26/2014) and support the Designated Veterinarian and Facility Manager in implementing internal welfare standards.
  • Perform daily monitoring of welfare, health status, housing, and enrichment, promptly identifying and reporting any concerns or deviations.
  • Verify staff training, competence, and documentation for all personnel involved in animal care and procedures.
  • Contribute to OPBA activities, including project evaluations, reviews, and the development and revision of SOPs, guidelines, and internal policies.
  • Manage data collection and accuracy for the national BDN system and support mandatory reporting to the Ministry of Health.
  • Oversee project documentation on NSIS/BDN, including notifications, updates, and the maintenance of complete internal archives for audits and inspections.
  • Supervise internal record‑keeping, ensuring completeness, traceability, and consistency across logs and documentation required for audits and regulatory inspections.
What You’ll Bring
Essential Requirements
  • Degree in Veterinary Medicine (single-cycle degree or equivalent).
  • License to practice as a veterinarian.
  • Completion of the experience and training requirements outlined in DM 5.08.2021 for the Animal Welfare Officer role.
  • Documented experience in an animal facility or preclinical research environment, preferably involving monitoring of animal welfare, supervision of husbandry conditions, or support to scientific procedures.
  • Operational knowledge of the regulatory framework (D.Lgs. 26/2014, Directive 2010/63/EU) and good practices for breeder and user establishments.
  • Experience working collaboratively with researchers, technicians, and facility personnel.
  • Good English knowledge, both written and spoken.
Preferred Requirements
  • Possession of the experience and specific training requirements stipulated pursuant to Ministerial Decree 5.08.2021 for functions a, c, and d.
