Job summary

Our new electronic patient record (EPR) will be the biggest and most important transformational change most of us in South London and Maudsley (SLaM) will ever be involved in. It will change the way we use and share information by having real‑time data about our patients wherever and whenever we need it.

Our Senior Communications and Engagement Officer plays a key role in the delivery and implementation of our EPR, creating content and co‑ordinating and supporting engagement and communications activity to agreed deadlines.

Key responsibilities
  • Work with the EPR Programme team on planning, identifying and delivering communications, engagement and other programme activities to drive awareness and understanding of the programme.
  • Provide a comprehensive, highly effective approach to programme communications and engagement to ensure staff, patients, the public and our stakeholders understand and are engaged in ensuring our plans benefit patient care and the communities we serve.
  • Use change communications best practice and work in partnership with colleagues to help shape and deliver a successful strategy to engage colleagues from all services in delivering the transformation required.
  • Identify communication needs and opportunities using own initiative and deliver clear, impactful messages.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate robust and inclusive internal and external communication plans that reflect our vision and values.
  • Support and advise the programme team on best practice in relation to communication and engagement.
  • Ensure we reach and hear from people with lived experience of our services and people from groups who are seldom heard from, using their feedback, expertise and insight to inform and develop our plans.
  • Lead on content design, development and production of multi‑media collateral to tell the story of our EPR.
  • Build positive networks with colleagues at all levels and actively seek feedback to improve how the programme includes, listens and engages with people.
  • Work across organisational boundaries to ensure consistency and connectivity with other electronic patient record and digital programmes in the Trust.
  • Engage with external contractors such as design agencies and media contacts as required to effectively deliver products and projects.
  • Provide training to programme team members on communications as required and support the provision of media training to identified spokespeople.
  • Support the Associate Director of Communication and Stakeholder Engagement in monitoring political activity in relation to the electronic patient record programme and in writing briefings on key issues.
  • Support the organisations communications and partnerships team in the event of a major incident or other emergency as and when required.
  • Set up and manage evaluation methods for ensuring the impact, effectiveness and reach of communications and engagement.
  • Prepare regular, easy‑to‑understand analytics updates to measure outputs and outcomes for the programme and for reports relevant committees and groups.
Qualifications
  • Essential – Educated to graduate degree level or significant equivalent previous proven experience of working at a similar level in communications.
  • Essential – Demonstrable evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Essential – Experience of working for a large complex organisation and understanding of and adhering to the requirement for confidentiality.
  • Essential – Good experience of working in the communications and engagement field and proven track record of delivery.
  • Essential – Proven experience of developing and delivering public‑facing communications across all channels including news and consumer media, social media, events, focus groups, marketing and online engagement.
  • Essential – Ability to present complex and sensitive information to a range of stakeholders, meeting the needs of different audiences.
  • Desirable – Membership of a recognised professional communications or marketing institution/body.
  • Desirable – Project management or programme management qualification to post‑graduate diploma level or equivalent experience.
  • Desirable – Experience of working for the NHS or other public sector organisation.
  • Desirable – Experience of working on an EPR or similar project.
  • Desirable – Experience in making the best use of technologies that support communications and engagement.
Pay & contract
  • Band 6
  • Salary £46,419 to £55,046 a year inclusive of HCAS
  • Contract fixed‑term, 18 months
  • Full‑time, Monday to Friday 8 am to 6 pm
Location

Maudsley Hospital (headquarters) – Denmark Hill, SE5 8AZ. Other sites may be required across the Trust.

Flexible working available as part of our new ways of working. Work Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm, giving a good work‑life balance.
