Job Purpose

The Teacher of Humanities (Upper School) is responsible for delivering high-quality teaching of Geography, History, and Global Citizenship to pupils aged 11–16 (KS3–KS4), ensuring strong academic outcomes and promoting a deeper understanding of the world, society, and the human experience. The role also involves contributing actively to the school’s wider mission and community life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teaching & Learning
  • Plan, deliver, and evaluate engaging and challenging lessons in Geography, History, and Global Citizenship.
  • Develop pupils’ understanding of global issues, historical perspectives, sustainability, and social responsibility.
  • Use a range of assessment strategies to monitor progress, set targets, and inform planning.
  • Differentiate lessons to cater for diverse learning needs, including SEN and EAL pupils.
  • Integrate digital tools and real-world contexts to make learning relevant, inclusive, and inspiring.
  • Curriculum Development and Subject Knowledge
  • Contribute to the development of Humanities schemes of work and assessment materials across KS3 and KS4.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure curriculum continuity, progression, and high standards.
  • Promote cross-curricular links and encourage connections between Geography, History, and Citizenship themes.
  • Pastoral Care
  • Support pupils’ well-being, resilience, and respectful behaviour as part of the pastoral system.
  • Take responsibility for a tutor group (if assigned), offering academic and emotional support.
  • Work proactively with the Head of Upper School and pastoral team to address any concerns sensitively and effectively.
  • Collaboration & Professional Development
  • Collaborate with the Head of Upper School and Senior Leadership Team on school priorities including academic progress, sustainability, and character education.
  • Participate in departmental, phase, and whole-school meetings.
  • Engage in regular professional development and reflect on teaching practice to drive improvement.
  • Community Engagement & Wider School Life
  • Contribute to whole-school events, open evenings, and community projects that align with the Humanities curriculum.
  • Support or lead enrichment opportunities such as school trips, workshops, or clubs related to History, Geography, or Citizenship.
  • Build positive relationships with parents and carers through regular communication and feedback.
  • Administration & Compliance
  • Maintain accurate records of assessment, attendance, and pupil progress.
  • Adhere to school policies, safeguarding procedures, and health and safety requirements.
  • Uphold professional standards and support wider school initiatives.

Qualifications

Key Skills and Qualifications

  • A degree in Humanities (e.g., Geography, History, Politics, International Relations, or a related subject)
  • PGCE, QTS, or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification
  • Eligibility to work in the UK

Experience

  • Experience teaching Humanities subjects (Geography, History, and/or Citizenship) at KS3 and KS4
  • Familiarity with UK curriculum and examination specifications
  • Experience working as part of a collaborative teaching team

Skills

  • Strong subject knowledge and passion for global learning, historical understanding, and social education
  • Excellent communication, planning, and organisational skills
  • Ability to inspire, challenge, and support pupils with a range of abilities
  • Proficient in using technology and data to enhance teaching and learning
