English Editor

MDPI
Manchester
GBP 26,000 - 35,000
Job description
Area: Editing and Academic Publishing

MDPI is the largest open access publisher in the world, with over 400 journals across a wide range of disciplines. Our mission is to foster open science and scientific exchange by delivering high-quality peer-reviewed research to scholars around the globe. The English Editing Department is integral to this mission, ensuring that all of MDPI’s manuscripts are published with clarity, consistency, and grammatical accuracy.

The Role: English Editor

We are looking for meticulous and dedicated individuals with a native-level grasp of the English language and the nuances of academic writing to support scholars publishing their research. English Editors support academic research by editing the language of peer-reviewed papers to a publication-ready standard.

Successful applicants undergo a probation period in which in-house training is provided by an experienced editor, after which there are opportunities to diversify the role and gain expertise in new areas.

This is a full-time, in-office position based in Manchester, UK. The starting salary is £26,250 per annum, increasing by 5% for non-PhD holders or 10% for PhD holders after successful completion of probation.

Responsibilities

  • Edit scholarly articles spanning a wide array of subject matter submitted to MDPI’s journal to a publication-ready standard.
  • Apply knowledge of the English language and the context of the manuscript to make the English clear, consistent, and grammatically correct, communicating the author’s message without changing their voice unnecessarily.
  • Ensure manuscripts align with MDPI’s house rules.
  • Meet tight deadlines and hit targets with a high degree of consistency.
  • Take on additional roles, such as training colleagues within and outside of the department and editing corporate material.

Experience And Skills

Essential criteria:

  • A bachelor’s degree in any subject.
  • Excellent level of proficiency in the English language.
  • Experience in editing, translating, or publishing.
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of an international team.
  • Experience working in an office environment.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Professional experience in academic research or publishing.
  • A master’s, PhD, or equivalent qualification.
  • Familiarity with LaTeX.

Benefits

Training and Bonuses

  • Focused in-house training in editing scholarly content according to MDPI’s conventions by experienced editors.
  • Performance-based quarterly bonuses.
  • Clear progression pathways.

Flexible Working Times

  • Employees can start work anytime between 7 am and 9 am.

Competitive Leave Packages

  • Twenty-five days of annual leave, in addition to bank holidays, paid leave for medical appointments, and days off for special circumstances such as moving house or getting married.

Bupa Health Cash Plan

  • Enrolment onto private health membership with Bupa after successful completion of probation; covers aspects of dental work, opticians, physical therapy, and more.

Perkbox

  • Access to our benefit platform “Perkbox”, which provides a range of discounts across various retailers such as food, drinks, tech, travel and more.

Cyclescheme and Techscheme

  • Employees can save 25–39% on a bike and accessories, and up to 10% on tax when purchasing tech equipment from retailers such as Ikea and Currys.

Socials

  • Monthly office lunches, office snacks, social activities, and seasonal parties.

Convenient Transportation Links

  • Office based in Manchester city centre.
  • Short walk from Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Oxford Road train stations.

Application Process

Candidates must submit their CV and cover letter. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and asked to complete two editing tests. If successful, candidates will be invited to an interview, which is the final stage of the application process.

Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion

At MDPI, we believe in fostering an inclusive work environment that respects and values individual differences and prioritises growth through continued learning, support, and feedback. We are always seeking new initiatives to advance diversity and inclusion across all our offices to create a more equal workforce.
