Job summary

A well-respected veterinary practice in Luton is seeking a Veterinary Surgeon for maternity cover starting May 2026. This position offers a balanced work schedule of four days a week with no out-of-hours duties. The ideal candidate will thrive in a supportive environment, with opportunities for further education and even partnership possibilities. The practice is well-equipped and advocates a healthy work/life balance. Competitive salary up to £65k (pro rata) depending on experience, along with various benefits including annual leave and CPD funding.

Job description
Our team

Veterinary Surgeon Maternity Cover from May 2026 – You will be working with a great team of longstanding colleagues, enjoy real job satisfaction and a superb work environment at Luton Vets for Pets.

The role

Initially a 6‑month contract and then on a rolling basis, a 4‑day week Monday to Friday 8.30am to 7pm, one early finish at 5pm, just 1 in 4 Saturdays 9am to 4pm, and no Sundays. There is also no OOH or sole charge, again ensuring everyone can maintain a healthy work/life balance. This is a balanced role with surgery and medicine and as a solid GP practice we at a steady pace, with a well‑managed rota and consults given 20 minutes as standard.

About you

The ideal candidate will want to thrive as a general practitioner. We’re flexible with the level of your experience, so if you have many years’ experience or require more support we can be the practice for you. We have the track record of vets progressing their clinical skills in a very supportive environment with an experienced team, and we encourage further education and certificates. The candidate could well have a desire to explore the options available in partnership/part ownership. This creates an exciting opportunity for the right person who wants to reap the rewards of having a stake in the business.

The practice

Our practice is RCVS accredited at General Practice Level. We have separate cat and dog wards, 4 consulting rooms, theatre, prep, diagnostic room and a fully stocked pharmacy. We are well equipped to help our clinicians diagnose and treat our patients with ultrasound, a video endoscope, digital x‑ray, full IDEXX in house laboratory, K‑Laser, blood pressure machine and a Multiparameter monitor.

Location

Luton Vets4Pets is 10 minutes from the Luton International Airport so it’s always easy to go overseas on holiday. Closer to home, we’re under an hour from London by train, with the closest train station a short walk away.
