Job description

The purpose of vehicle workshops is to ensure that vehicles are safe and legal and minimise vehicles downtime.

As a Team Leader in Fleet Services, the post supports a busy specialist technical area where there are a wide range of duties.

The post is responsible for the day-to-day line management of Vehicle Technicians and will manage and prioritise their workloads.

The post provides specialist technical support to service users and third parties.

The main focus of work will be to ensure the ongoing roadworthiness and maintenance of all council vehicles whilst working with other specialist technical support staff within the Fleet Services Team and across Dorset Council.

The council has nearly two hundred large goods vehicles on its Operator Licencing and the role supports and ensures the authorities continued compliance with the Operator Licence as required and enforced by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

The post holders work is within a heavily regulated, legislated and specialist service.

Team Leader Duties
  • Ensuring vehicles are safe and legal
  • Supering / allocating work to Vehicle Technicians
  • Carrying out preventative maintenance and defect repairs
  • First point of contact for services / customers taking vehicles in for work, collecting vehicles.
  • Signing off safety inspection sheets (these sheets are legal documents)
  • Ensuring the workshop is safe (updating risk assessments, general health and safety)
  • Liaising with Technical Officers based at different fleet offices.
  • Ordering, receiving and being accountable for parts
  • Keeping the workshop clean, tidy, and safe

In additional to the technical knowledge required, these individuals need to have good organisational skills and remain calm as the job is often pressurised with conflicting priorities.

Travel requirement

This position has an occasional travel requirement (including but not limited to) visiting and working at other offices and depots.
