Job description

The Detention Advice Service (DAS) is a voluntary organisation set up twenty years ago to provide advice, information and assistance to those who are detained or threatened with detention under Immigration Act powers.

Each year more than 25,000 people are detained by the UK Border Agency. They are held without trial, charge or time limit. Many of these people are asylum seekers but other foreign nationals, such as criminal justice prisoners, are detained as well. Detainees are a very vulnerable and isolated group. They may not understand the system that they are caught up in, or the options that are open to them. They may not know anyone in this country to turn to for help.

Our advice workers regularly visit prisons across London and the south of England to provide specialist legal advice directly to foreign national prisoners and detainees. Alongside our face-to-face work, we deal with requests for help by telephone and post from prisoners and detainees across the country.

Job Opportunity

DAS (Detention Advice Service) is recruiting an Advice Worker (OISC Regulated Lawyer) to provide immigration advice in prisons and detention centres. A minimum of two years’ full-time advice work experience is required. Previous experience of work with detainees, work in prisons and knowledge of immigration/asylum procedures would be an advantage.

The post is a three day per week permanent position with scope to be made full time. The salary for this post is £24,157 pro rata.
