Are you an organised, calm and compassionate individual looking to make a meaningful difference in a fast‑paced healthcare environment? The Emergency Department (ED) at Charing Cross Hospital is seeking a highly motivated and approachable Receptionist to join our frontline team. This is a vital role in ensuring that every patient and visitor arriving at our department receives a welcoming, efficient and supportive first point of contact.

As the receptionist in the emergency department, you will play a key part in maintaining the smooth running of our busy service. You will greet patients, relatives, and colleagues with professionalism and empathy, recognising that many individuals arriving in the ED may be anxious, distressed or unwell. Your ability to provide reassurance, clear information and a calm presence will be essential to creating a positive experience for everyone who enters the department.

About You

We are looking for someone who is confident, compassionate, and adaptable. The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to remain composed in a busy, dynamic environment. You should be comfortable using computer systems, able to multitask and capable of working both independently and as part of a wider team.

  • Always maintain a high level of customer care and liaise and communicate effectively and sympathetically with all visitors and patients to the department.
  • Always greet patients in a courteous manner, dealing with all enquiries politely and efficiently, displaying empathy when answering queries at the reception desk or over the telephone.
  • Monitor the welfare of patients in the waiting area and notify a member of the clinical team if concerned about a patient’s wellbeing. Escalate when there are patients that are deteriorating in the waiting area.
  • Escalate violence and aggression and alert appropriate staff.
  • Obtain patients’ details in a sensitive manner taking into consideration the diversities of the public.
  • Cover service needs across all receptionist roles in the Urgent Emergency Medicine (UEM) directorate.
  • Ensure the electronic patient record in Cerner is as up to date and accurate as possible, to the best of our knowledge. Ensure that patient records, notes, letters etc. are prepared and scanned within the agreed timescale.
  • Assist the Reception Supervisor and Business Manager in all matters relating to the smooth running of the department.
  • Ensure that all policies and procedures regarding reception are adhered to.
  • Provide clerical support and hold an assigned action card in the Emergency Department in the event of a Major Incident.
