Job description
Overview

Nurses and Paramedics, are you ready to make your next career move away from a hospital or community setting? You may be seeking something less physically demanding but still want a challenge, to learn new skills, or to use your existing skills in a new way. The post holder will work within our Integrated Contact Centres (ICC) based across the North West. As a UECC you will be responsible for the remote assessment of patients while ensuring the delivery of excellent patient care through the continuous achievement of high clinical standards. Initial training is provided, followed by a period of skill consolidation, after which you will develop additional skills to meet service needs.

Training for this role is full-time and lasts between 6 and 8 weeks. The classroom element is Monday to Friday for 2 weeks, with mentorship during live call shifts. You must be able to commit to training in full, as no annual leave can be taken during training. Training venues for 2026 are planned across the North West; specific dates will be discussed with successful candidates if offered employment.

Responsibilities
  • Remote assessment of patients within the Integrated Contact Centres (ICC).
  • Provide clinical advice to clinical and non-clinical colleagues as the post develops.
  • Support staff returning to practice or those requiring mentorship.
  • Manage the clinical queue and refer calls to partner organisations providing Clinical Assessment Services on behalf of NWAS.
  • Ensure patients get access to the right care, at the right time, in the right place; every time.
  • Participate in training and skill consolidation periods and undertake additional skills as required to support service needs.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Post registration clinical experience in a face-to-face, primary or acute care setting, emergency department, or pre-hospital role.
  • Triage experience.
  • Excellent leadership and mentoring skills to support staff.
  • Resilient, highly motivated and passionate about delivering outstanding patient care.
  • Ability to adapt to a new and challenging setting.
  • Basic computer skills.
Training and Recruitment Process

Successful candidates will undergo simulated telephone assessment via Teams (W/C 16 February 2026) and a face-to-face interview (W/C 23 February 2026). If unavailable for these dates, further dates will not be offered. Previous applicants need not apply. A conditional offer of employment will be subject to NHS Employment Checks.

Employment Checks and Conditions
  • A valid right to work and identity check.
  • Reference checks covering a minimum of three years and sickness absence history over two years; health questions are asked only after an offer is made. Absences related to disability may be excluded from considerations.
  • DBS disclosure may incur a charge where applicable.
  • Satisfactory medical clearance from Occupational Health.
  • Vaccination against COVID-19 is encouraged but not a condition of employment.
