Job description
Overview

Unqualified English Supervisor – Secondary Schools (South Bristol & Somerset)
Pay: £13.75–£14.50 per hour
Contract: Flexible / Temp / Ongoing / Long-term available
Start Date: As soon as you’re ready

Looking to build your classroom experience and share your passion for English, without needing QTS? Protocol Education is recruiting enthusiastic and reliable Cover Supervisors to support secondary schools across South Bristol and Somerset. This is a fantastic opportunity if you’re considering a career in teaching, want to gain practical experience in schools, or simply enjoy working with young people and want flexible, rewarding work.

As a Cover Supervisor, you’ll step into lessons when teachers are absent, delivering pre-prepared English work and ensuring pupils remain on task. You don’t need to be a qualified teacher — what matters is confidence, strong communication, and the ability to manage a classroom with energy and authority.

You’ll gain valuable, hands-on classroom experience, working in a variety of schools. For those considering teacher training in the future, this is one of the best stepping stones you can take.

Responsibilities
  • Supervising classes during teacher absence and delivering pre-set English work
  • Ensuring students remain engaged, focused, and make progress in the lesson
  • Managing behaviour consistently, fairly, and with confidence
  • Collecting and returning completed work for the classroom teacher
  • Providing short feedback on class progress and behaviour
  • Building strong relationships with staff and pupils across different schools
  • Planning and marking only required for longer-term placements, such as maternity cover
What we’re looking for
  • Previous experience working with young people (schools, youth groups, tutoring, sports coaching or similar)
  • Confidence to manage secondary classrooms and handle behaviour in a professional way
  • Strong subject knowledge in English up to GCSE level
  • A positive, adaptable, and reliable approach
  • Degree-level education or strong English skills preferred (but QTS is not required)
  • Reliability and eagerness to take on roles that support schools when they need it most
