We're looking for a high-performing Underwriting Manager to drive technical excellence and deliver results in our Home Technical Underwriting team. This role will offer hybrid working opportunity, with time from one of our offices in either London, Birmingham, Bournemouth or Guildford.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a team of Senior Underwriters and Underwriters, monitoring key business metrics, controlling underwriting standards, and supporting business activities, ensuring that business written is in line with our risk appetite, adhering to underwriting authority and standards.

Pay is based on relevant experience, skills for the role, and location. Salary is only one part of our total reward package.

About You
  • Monitors the performance of key performance measures within the business unit, identifying under and over performance, implementing remedial and opportunity actions as appropriate.
  • Has a strong understanding of regulatory requirements and reporting.
  • Adheres to Underwriting Authority and understands the impact case decisions have on Profit and Loss and the achievement of plan.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of customer journeys and associated documentation
  • Regularly assess customer outcomes and implement improvements where necessary
  • Produces Technical training material and is experienced in training, mentoring and coaching. In conjunction with Head Office and training coordinator, organises and leads Technical training. Participates in assessment, design and delivering of technical training as required.
  • Liaises with all other appropriate internal parties including Sales and Distribution, Pricing, Claims and Operations and represents the Company at internal and external forums.
Essential Skills
  • An in-depth understanding of the make-up of policy wordings, clauses and non-standard covers available and their implications with an ability to convey that understanding.
  • Able to identify cover and hazards influencing the acceptance, pricing or terms applicable to a risk and apply risk management techniques and appropriate underwriting rules to ensure sufficient breadth of risks is available to the Company.
  • Understanding of the skills and tools required for effective Underwriting and has the ability to use these key skills to underwrite risks profitably.
  • Understands causes and costs of claims and can apply appropriate risk management tools to mitigate loss.
  • Ability to interpret statistical data, including identification of trends, influences and anomalies on a case-by-case and local account basis.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage a team of technical subject matter experts, ensuring effective workload planning, prioritization, and delivery.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong collaborative relationships with key internal stakeholders, including Operations, Claims, and Marketing teams.
  • Full working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages.
  • High level Underwriting Authority in Line of Business achieved or being worked towards.
  • Able to organize. Structuring and managing the teams workload, effectively prioritizing and managing stakeholders. Executing and delivering on promises.
