Are you ready to take on a unique and highly specialised role supporting one of the Constabulary's most specialist teams? The Underwater Search Team is a dedicated unit responsible for conducting technical and specialist police underwater and confined space searches in environments where few others can operate. From recovering vital evidence to locating missing persons, the work of this team makes a profound difference to the public in some of the most challenging circumstances in which UK police operate.

As a Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining a wide range of safety‑critical, high‑value specialist equipment. This includes ensuring all assets are serviced in line with legislation, Police Diving Rules, and manufacturer guidelines. You will also maintain accurate, auditable records and support regular inspections and audits. This role demands professionalism, precision, and a strong personal commitment. You'll be joining a close‑knit team that values excellence, resilience, and mutual support. Please note: Within Avon and Somerset Constabulary, this role is formally titled Maintenance Officer.

Responsibilities
  • Maintaining and monitoring all diving equipment (and where necessary, other specialist equipment) in accordance with training provided to you, manufacturers’ service schedules and Police Diving Rule, replacing items as needed within authorised budgetary limits.
  • Conducting weekly minor maintenance and arranging servicing of all craft used by the Underwater Search Unit.
  • Recording and monitoring expenditure on equipment, maintenance, and servicing; verify invoices against recorded costs.
Qualifications
  • A methodical and responsible approach to equipment maintenance
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Experience of maintaining diving equipment in a professional setting
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation relevant to police or commercial diving operations
  • Computer literacy and confidence in maintaining digital records
  • Holding a full current driving licence or able to travel around the force area using alternative transport is desirable.
  • Eligibility: Must have a 5 year “checkable history” in the UK; ideally you would have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years.
