Job description

We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic Trust Doctor (CT2‑equivalent) to join our General Surgery team. This role is ideal for doctors seeking to consolidate core surgical skills, build experience within a busy surgical unit, or prepare for progression into core or higher surgical training programmes.

As a key member of the surgical team, you will provide clinical support across the General Surgery services, including participation in ward care, emergency admissions, surgical assessment, outpatient clinics and theatre sessions under appropriate supervision. The post offers exposure to a broad range of benign and emergency general surgical conditions, with opportunities to develop procedural skills and experience in endoscopy where appropriate.

  • Provide day‑to‑day clinical care for patients on the General Surgery wards, including assessment, documentation, care planning and timely escalation to senior clinicians when required.
  • Participate in the emergency surgical take, including clerking new admissions, initial assessment of acute surgical presentations, arranging appropriate investigations, and commencing management plans under senior supervision.
  • Support the smooth running of the surgical assessment and emergency pathways, ensuring timely review of referrals from ED, AMU and other specialties.
  • Assist in theatre and endoscopy lists as appropriate, gaining exposure to a broad range of General Surgical procedures while developing core operative and procedural skills under supervision.
  • Attend outpatient clinics to support patient assessment, follow‑up and pathway progression, including contributing to documentation and preparation of treatment plans.
  • Contribute to safe and effective handovers, ensuring accurate communication of patient needs and outstanding tasks between teams.
  • Work as part of the General Surgery junior rota, providing cover for ward, emergency and out‑of‑hours duties at CT2 level with appropriate supervision and support.
  • Participate in clinical governance activities, including morbidity and mortality meetings, audit, quality improvement projects and service development initiatives.

You will join a well‑supported and friendly multidisciplinary team, working closely with registrars and consultant surgeons who are enthusiastic about teaching, supervision and professional development. The department has an active involvement in service improvement, cancer pathways, and digital transformation work, including the implementation of the EPIC EPR system. The Trust Doctor role provides a valuable opportunity to gain high‑quality surgical experience within a dynamic and supportive clinical environment, making it an excellent stepping stone for those looking to enhance their skills and progress within surgery or related specialties.
