Overview

Senior Traffic Engineer – £40–£45 per hour (Umbrella) – London

A London Local Authority is seeking an interim Senior Traffic Engineer to join the Highways team in the London Borough. This is an exciting opportunity to take responsibility for projects from feasibility through to design and implementation within a fast-moving and dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and delivery of highway public realm improvements, active travel projects, and traffic calming/causality reduction schemes.
  • Work on Section 106 and 278 projects, drainage and sustainable drainage systems to protect highways and reduce surface water flooding.
  • Apply theoretical and practical engineering methods to solve complex highway problems.
  • Support Principal Engineers on service and operational matters.
  • Ensure compliance with design standards, best practices, and health & safety regulations, including CDM.
  • Manage projects effectively: plan, budget, organise, and control tasks, people, and resources.
  • Use programme and contract management skills to maintain budgets and deliver projects efficiently.
  • Respond promptly to member and resident enquiries, including attending public meetings to explain proposals in a clear, non-technical manner.
Requirements
  • Professional qualification in highway/traffic engineering or equivalent, or working towards one.
  • Proven experience delivering highway projects and applying highway/traffic engineering principles.
  • Strong knowledge of highways legislation, street works, and health & safety requirements.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office packages.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with residents, businesses, and elected members.
