Theatre Scrub Practitioner

County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust invite applications for the position of Theatre Practitioner for scrub for our site at the Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We currently have both substantive and bank posts available.

The departmental Practice Development team, in coordination with the Theatre Management team, supports the staff members to identify and realise areas for career progression, both on an individual basis and also as a team approach to achieving their highest potential.

Main duties of the job
  • Participate in the monitoring of standards of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
  • Participate in direct care needs of patients, providing expert knowledge of all clinical specialities and acting as a role model.
  • Participate in audit and monitoring accurate documentation in accordance with Trust policy, NMC and HCPC guidelines.
  • Be competent in facilitating an emergency service covering all specialties provided within the department, during elective and nonelective periods.
  • Ensure the safe administration of drugs in accordance with Trust Policy, and NMC and HCPC guidelines.
  • Ensure that all procedures and techniques are carried out in accordance with local competencies and agreed policies and standards.
  • Ensure rights, dignity and confidentiality of the patient are protected at all times.
  • Act as patient advocate in all matters relating to his/her care, treatment and welfare.
  • Check departmental cleanliness and where necessary assist other members of the team in the preparation, clearing and cleaning of the operating suite and equipment before, during and after operating.

Job responsibilities

To provide patient care within the perioperative environment and act as a skilled member of the multidisciplinary team.

To assess care needs, develop programmes of care and implement and evaluate these programmes of care, carrying out all relevant forms of peri‑operative patient care without direct supervision over a 24‑hour period, caring for both adult and paediatric patients undergoing routine and emergency surgery.

The post carries a regular commitment to rotational night duty and out‑of‑hours work, however this is not a requirement for individuals starting on a training programme.

  • Registered Nurse / Operating Department Practitioner
  • Experience as a Registered Nurse / ODP within the Operating Theatre
  • Teaching and assessing qualification or willingness to work towards
  • Diploma or degree or willingness to work towards or relevant practical experience within the department specialities
