Job description
Delivery Lead - Underground Civil Assets

Acton, London (Hybrid Working)

Project Overview

We are partnering with a Delivery Unit on one of the UK's most significant, high-profile tunnelling and rail infrastructure programmes. This unit is responsible for complex underground structures, including extensive bored tunnels, ventilation shafts, and all associated civil engineering assets. This leadership position is centred on ensuring the successful design, construction, and assurance of these critical sub-surface components.

The Opportunity

As the Delivery Lead - Underground Civil Assets, you will hold a key leadership role, accountable for the entire life cycle of multiple complex civil structures within the tunnelling scope. This involves driving delivery from design coordination through to final construction and handover. You will strategically manage the interface between the tunnelling process (TBM operations) and the installation of all fixed civil assets, ensuring technical compliance and schedule alignment on a mission‑critical project.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Delivery: Developing and implementing robust delivery strategies for all underground civil works, ensuring alignment with the overall programme schedule and budget.
  • Engineering Assurance: Providing technical and project leadership over detailed design and construction methodologies for major structures, including cross passages, tunnel connections, and secondary linings.
  • Construction Oversight: Directing the supervision of all on‑site civil construction activities. This includes managing complex excavation and structural works—such as concrete pouring and formwork—and rigorously implementing quality control protocols.
  • Stakeholder and Supply Chain Management: Coordinating with design consultants, specialist subcontractors, and internal departments to resolve technical challenges and mitigate risks effectively.
  • Safety and Quality: Championing the highest standards of Health Safety and Environment (HSE), ensuring all construction methodologies adhere to stringent safety regulations and project assurance requirements.
Essential Candidate Profile
  • Extensive, progressive experience, typically 10 years or more, in heavy civil engineering, tunnelling, or underground construction.
  • Proven expertise in leading the successful delivery of large-scale infrastructure projects, ideally within the rail, metro, or utility sectors.
  • Strong technical knowledge of underground civil construction processes, materials, and equipment (e.g., SCL, FRC works, complex temporary works).
  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with demonstrable experience managing multidisciplinary teams and engaging effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • A relevant technical degree (e.g., Civil Engineering) or substantial equivalent experience.
