Job description

We are looking for a Support Worker & Carer for a disabled teenager for waking nights and day shifts. 2 waking nights (13 h) and 2 day shifts (7‑8 h) per week. Full‑time hours 37.5 hrs minimum, sometimes more. £16 per hour – £15 during 3‑month training. Please read the full ad before applying. Initiate conversation with a brief explanation of your interest. Experience with autism and disability required.

About the teenager

The teenager is a friendly, non‑verbal, very autistic young man with severe epilepsy, a movement disorder and additional health needs. He can walk only with support. He needs help with all elements of his daily life. He has 24‑hour 1:1 support and, for some activities, 2:1 support (eg. when visiting the pool, special needs bike club, visiting the park, going to shops and occasionally cafés and pub lunch). During all activities (even while walking) he requires full support at all times. His health conditions can lead to extended periods in hospital, so we need someone who can be fun but also very patient and able to provide extra support during hospital stays.

Responsibilities
  • Be fit and strong to give appropriate support.
  • Preferably have studied or be studying Psychology, nursing, health and social care, etc.
  • Possess experience in special needs and autism, or some related experience.
  • Learn care elements such as catheterisation, PEG, Peristeen, and medication administration.
  • Deliver care with dignity.
  • Attend team meetings with the ABA consultant and the experienced team.
  • Receive training through shadowing an experienced team member.
  • Be able to accompany him to the pool (shallow part only) – swimmers only.
  • Work two waking night shifts and two day shifts per week, and cover for colleagues when needed.
  • Work some weekends and bank holidays (shared with the team). Provide cover over Christmas, New Year, Easter, and some extra time in summer.
  • Remain flexible around days worked to accommodate studies or other commitments.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Experience with autism and disability required.
  • Enhanced DBS required.
  • Availability for a minimum of 12 months.
  • Self‑employed basis with UTR number possible.
  • Full‑time: 37.5–40+ hours. More hours when covering for colleagues.
  • All bank holidays paid at double rate.
  • Non‑smokers & non‑vapers only.
  • Ideally based in North London.
Benefits
  • £16 per hour after training (first £15).
  • Bank holiday pay £30‑£32.
  • Friendly dog and supportive team environment.
