A local support organization in Newcastle upon Tyne is seeking a dedicated individual to assist a 14-year-old boy with daily activities and community engagement. The role includes supporting him at home and during outings. Candidates must have awareness of diabetes and communication skills using PECS and Makaton. Training will be provided, and permission to work in the U.K. is essential.
My son is a happy 14-year-old who loves slapstick humour. He really enjoys being outside, wherever there are interesting things for him to see, and he is always on the move.
His interests include visiting Newcastle to look at shops and watch street musicians, going to the coast, parks, National Trust properties, museums and places like Beamish. He also enjoys visiting the Alan Shearer Centre, especially the hydro pool, swimming and trampolining. He loves trying new things and broadening his interests. His favourite eating out spot is Kentucky Fried Chicken for popcorn chicken and coleslaw. He also likes traveling on metros and buses.
Your role will be to support him in doing the things that he enjoys, either in the community or at home. You may work alongside me, taking him out together, or you may support him by yourself. At home he loves books and listening to stories, music, watching his favourite programmes on TV for short periods, and messy play.
He needs help with all aspects of daily living. He mainly communicates using Pecs’s symbols and Makaton signs to tell you what he wants and needs. He can use some words and understand things said to him if it is put in a very direct and simple way.
Awareness of diabetes and the ability to support administration of medication are required; training will be provided for the use of medication. At the time of starting the employment, the successful candidate must have permission to work in the U.K.
